I would like  any information on  James O'Brien and Ellen White who lived in Aughinish, Ogonnelloe with their family: John (born 1836), Margaret (1838), Sarah (1840), Thomas (1843) and Michael (1845).

Thomas immigrated to Missouri, USA on or before 1874 and married Ellen [Nellie] Halloran (also from Clare born circa 1858) in Missouri on 30th October 1877 and Thomas died on 26 April 1897 in Missouri, USA.

  • Dear Catherine:

    Many thanks for your query.

I have had a look for you in the Ogonnelloe register.  Unfortunately, the register starts in 1841, so there is no record for John, margaret or Sarah.  However, there are two records for the others:

    1.  Thomas baptised 2 June 1843

    Father:  James O'Brien, Aughinish

    Mother:  Ellen White

    Sponsor:  Anne Herbert, Aughinish.

    2.  Michael baptised 5 July 1845

    Father:  James O'Brien, Aughinish

    Mother:  Ellen Whyte  (note spelling)

    Sponsor:  Ellen Carroll, Aughinish.

In addition, I also noted that there were two marriages for O'Briens:

    1.  Joanna O'Brien from Aughinish married Thomas Rochford, Feakle on 20 February 1860.

Witnesses were:  Anne Sexton, Caher and Thomas Rochford, Tulla.

    2.  Pat O'Brien from Aughinish (sp. Ahanish) married Margaret Ryan, Ballinaglera on 6 Feb. 1864

Witnesses were:  Thomas Molony, Glin and Winifred Madden, Killaloe.

You should also have a look at the Clare County Library website  www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy.  They have a lot of online resources.

Many thanks for posting to Ireland Reaching Out and best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
