Looking for connections/information regarding the Simon O'Donnell family of Labasheeda, County Clare.

Simon (b. ca. 1839) m. Margaret Frawley (b. ca. 1837)

Their children:

Simon (b. ca. 1861)

Patrick (b. 1866)

Denis (b. 1868)

Mary (b. 1871)

Bridget (b. 1872)

Winifred (b. 1875)

I have traced birth records for all except Simon (1861), who is my ggrandfather. Presumably he was born in another parish.  He married Bridget McInerney in 1888, which is the year they both emmigrated to the U.S.  I am wondering if they married before leaving Ireland.  The couple lived in Yonkers, NY and had 4 children: John, Alice, Margaret and William. Simon died in 1906, and Bridget between 1915-17.

Thank you in advance for any help/direction offered!

  • I think the records you found for the the later children may be extracted civil birth records (see here on FamilySearch), which would explain why Simon is not included, as registration of births started in 1864. You would need to search for a baptism record for Simon jnr., and any other possible older children, as he was born before this.

The placenames used on these extracted civil records are often registration sub-districts. Tracing back to the civil BMD Index for one of the children, Denis page 376, shows that the district he was registered in was Killadysert, and this contained a sub-district named Labasheeda. There is also a townland named Labasheeda in Killofin civil parish, so it's possible that the extracted record refers to this, but from what I've seen more usual for a district  to be used on these records.

I'll see if I can work out the corresponding RC parish for the district..

I found the 1901 census record for the older Simon and Margaret in Cullinagh townland.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Killofin/Cullina…

It also appears that the older Simon died in the third quarter of 1901 and Margaret in 1919. Details to follow.

I could not locate a civil marriage index record for young Simon and Bridget.

  • Following on from Rogers post, the townland mentioned, Cullinagh is in Killofin civil parish, and would have been part of  Labasheeda sub-district mentioned earlier. According to Lewis 1837, Killofin civil parish was part of the RC parish union of Kilmurry-Clonderlaw. (there are several locations named Kilmurry in the county, and sometimes the barony name is added) The RC parish name seems to be 'Kilmurry-McMahon', and is located in south Co. Clare - see : this link (Irish Times RC Parish Map)

  • Thank you for your help! This is most appreciated and I look forward to getting the RC parish info so I can do some additional digging.  My mother never knew her grandparents so I'm trying to collect whatever information I can to help her know where her roots are!

  • Thank you for your help! This is most appreciated.  I have seen the 1901 census and thought that perhaps couple were Simon's parents. I look forward to whatever other information on them you might find.  I'm awaiting a search on a death certificate for Bridget, now that I've narrowed down her timeline and hopefully that will also give me some clues. The romantic in me wonders if they met as they crossed the Atlantic...

  • Elizabeth:

There is a Simon O'Donnell civil death index record in the third quarter of 1901 in the Killadysert registration district which includes Killofin civil parish. The death is recorded in Volume 4 page 162.

The only likely record for a Margaret O'Donnell in Killadysert is a death record in the second quarter of 1919. Volume 4 page 221

I looked for her in the 1911 census and could not locate her. In 1901 Cullinagh had 55 households including an RIC barrack. In 1911 Cullenagh (changed spelling) only had 6 households and no O'Donnells. The town of Labasheeda was officially created somewhere between 1901 and 1911. Most of the 1901 families in Cullinagh were officially transferred to Labasheeda including the RIC barrack but still no Margaret O'Donnell. Possibly she was living somewhere else but it gives me pause regarding the 1919 record.

You can get copies of either record for around 4 euros each. If you want to get a copy let me know md I can provide the process.

I checked out the surname McInerney at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/

Over 90 per cent of the McInerneys in the Griffiths Valuation were found in Co. Clare so it is possible that young Simon and Bridget were married in Ireland but they also could have married in America. I' would look for an. NYC marriage record.

  • The baptism records for the RC parish of 'Kilmurry McMahon & Killofin' go back to 1845, marriages records go back slightly earlier to 1837. Historic records for the parish can be accessed on microfilm (ref. Pos 2485) in the  National Library, but do not seem to be included on the RootsIreland website yet. They only started adding Co. Clare RC records recently and only have baptisms for a few parishes so far. Hopefully transcripts for the parish of 'Kilmurry McMahon & Killofin' are on their 'ToDo' list.
