I am interested in any information I can find about my great-grandfather, Thomas Warren who immigrated to the US prior to 1880, and returned to Ireland in 1894, just before his death.

In the US 1880 Census, Thomas Warren is listed as a resident of a boarding house in Holyoke, Massachusetts (a mill town), with his sisters Johanna and Catherine. I have been unable to find any further records for Johanna or Catherine (one older and one younger than Thomas.)

Thomas subsequently moved to eastern Massachusetts and married Catherine Morgan (born in Pennsylvania, US to Bridget McBride and John Morgan.

Thomas died in an Ennis workhouse in 1894. His death certificate shows a former residence of Cappalea.

If anyone has any information about my Warren family, I'd be grateful to receive it. Thank you for reading my message.

  • THE WARREN’S OF CAPPALEA NORTH, KILLANIV

The Warren family was present in Cappalea North at the time of the 1826 Tithe Applotments.  Michael Warrant is identified as occupying the land

    Thomas Warrant and Kate Griffey

Thomas Warrant and Kate Griffey were likely married prior to 1853.  They had at least one child named Patrick, who was baptized on February 24, 1853.  His Godparents were John Griffy and Bridget McMahon.

Thomas Warren is listed in the 1855 Griffith’s Valuation as renting 67 acres, one rood and 24 perches of land from William Armstrong.  The land contains a house and offices.

    James Warren and Honor Hickey

James Warren and Honor Hickey were married in Kilmaley Parish, in 1888.  They had at least five children.  Here are the baptism records for some of those children:

    • Katie Warren was born February 12, 1889 (George Warren and Maria Warren)
    • Thomas Warren was born August 19, 1890 (Charles Moroney and Mary Kellly)
    • Michael Warren was born December 15, 1891 (James and Mary Malley)
    • James Warren was born March 4, 1896 (William Hickey and Ellen Neylon)

Thomas Warren was enrolled at Kilmaley School in 1899.  His brother Michael Warren was enrolled in 1900.

  • Hi i just came across your post. I think we may be related. I am desc from Catherine Warren from clare. c 1808. Think her dad was john a brother to Michael c 1790. Her brother was John who went to kiltenanlea. She married in Ennis (John was witness- not sure if brother or father!!) and they came to Australia where I am.Think they were the Cloonfeagh Warrens. I have done dna with family finder at family tree maker and am looking for others to do the same so we can prove the connection. I found a connection to Louise Warren in Dublin who is a desc of the brother John.

Thanks Felicity Savage in South Australia

  • Hello

I've done some more research and found my Warren family in Cappalea, North. My 2nd g-grandfather, Thomas Warren is listed in the 1855 Griffith’s Valuation as renting 67 acres, one rood and 24 perches of land from William Armstrong.  The land contains a house and offices.

My 2X great grandmother was Mary Neylon (Naylon). Mary is the daughter of Denis Nealon and Mary McGuan (McGuin?).

Children born to Thomas and Mary after 1864 (when Civil Records are available) are: William b 10 May, 1864, James b 3 Oct 1866, Catharine b 15 May 1868, Eliza b 11 April, 1870 and George b 10 August, 1872.

My great-grandfather Thomas was born in 1860 or 1861. I've not yet learned to what parish his family belonged so I have not found church records of his baptism.

It seems likely that Johanna and Catherine, with whom he boarded in 1880, may have been cousins, not sisters.

Still looking for a Date of Birth for Thomas (1860 or 1861) AND his emigration date.
