Looking for my ancestor John Hallinan. It is probable that he came from the Shannon Valley, close to the Tipperary border, but I don't know what parish.

his parents were Patrick Hallinan and Bridget Coughlan. He was probably born in the 1820s or 1830s. Hard to know as he almost certainly lied about his age after emigrating to Autralia! It is probable that he emigrated to the USA first, possibly in the 1850s.

Sorry I don't have more accurate information.

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. Have you managed to find out any more about the above?

  • Hi Chris,

That is very interesting!!   I am also searching for my Ancestor.   His name was John Hallinan, and he was married to a Susan Coughlin.  His son Thomas Hallinan 1811 - 1876, and his wife Honor Cooney 1827 - 1896 migrated to Australia in 1862 with Assisted Passage on a ship called the "Coldstream" sponsored by Richard Blood 1813 - 1913 with their 8 children. They settled in Blayney near Bathurst, NSW.

It was said that his father, John Hallinan was married to a Susan Coughlin and that they migrated to New  York, the USA with perhaps another brother and that possibly the brother then came to Australia.

We went to Ireland last week, and found the land that he worked on, at Kilshanny, County Clare.

    Best regards,

    Patricia Quinn
