Matthew Tully states on his English censuses that he was born in Lavey, Cavan.  He married in Lancashire, England in 1919, aged 41, a coal miner.  His father is listed as Michael Tully, general labourer, deceased.

Any information  would be gratefully received.

  • Hi Margaret,

www.rootsireland.ie has the birth of Matthew Tully father Michael baptised 1878 in Cavan.

If you purchase the record you should get the parents' names and the parish. Hopefully, you could then get the parents' marriage and their parents' names to keep working back.

  • Hi Margaret,

I will see can I help you?

Are you looking for Matthew Tully's brothers & sisters and their decendants?

I looked up 1901 Census & there are 21 Michael Tullys

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

I looked up the name Michael as usually a child is named after the father.

Lavey is a Parish & covers a large area.  However you are lucky in that Matthew was born in 1878 & that is well within Civil registration which starts in 1864.  I think the best course of action is to get Michaels birth certificate & that will give you his townland & the names of both his parents.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try contacting the Cavan Co Library for further assistance.

Cavan Genealogy will for a fee do a family search for you & give you some more answers.  If you cannot read the townlands or names I can help you that, as I most likely will be able to make out the handwriting on the certificates.

When you get the townland & the names of his family, I will be able to look up phone books & try & make contact with your family on your behalf.  The more information you post will be able to identify your family.

Best of luck with your search & please let me know how you got on.
