From what I understand all the people that immigrated to the U.S. in 1916 were on ships; well at least the regular people, so I frantically searched google on the history of ships that brought people to the U.S. from Ireland, including the ones that arrived in Ellis Island, no luck in finding my great grandfather John James Nolan but then while doing some research on the history of Ireland it crossed my mind he immigrated to the U.S. during the Easter Rising, so out of curiosity I searched online the Irish Army Census records for the year 1916, Sure enough it seems that my great grandfather was part of the Easter Rising in the document I found while searching the Irish Army Census records, Im adding an attachment of the document, in the document it shows he is from the parish Killinagh, which is of course in county Cavan. Now the part that does not makes sense to me is that if my great grandfather John James Nolan was part of the Easter Rising then how would he have immigrated to the U.S. while being perhaps in the Irish Army and then later on join the U.S. military? Did dual citizenships existed back then between different countries?

Dear Francis,
I looked at this record & the addres is Kilmanogh,(possible should be spelled Kilmacanogue) Co Wicklow & it also states his mothers address as the same & he is aged 20, so if your man is from Killinagh, this is not him.

Dear Carmel,
When I looked at the document it was kind of hard to read because of the cursive writing, I searched frantically on google to see how my great grandfather may have came to the U.S. from Ireland in 1916, so far I had no luck in finding any commercial or civilian ships traveling across the Atlantic around that year, I also figured since it was the middle of the great war or Easter rising which started in 1914 that its possible that it was not safe for normal travel, so I automatically assumed that their might have been mostly war ships going across the atlantic in 1916, thats why I decided to search the Irish Army census records for my great grandfather John James Nolan. I had no luck in finding him by searching ship passenger lists from ships that went through Ellis Island. I even searched the passenger list for the Titanic, his name was not there either. This truely is a mystery,
Thank you. :-)

My 2nd pair of eyes might help you.

Not a relation but there is a John Nolan leaving from Liverpool(he was Irish) on 23 Sep 1916 and arriving New York on 1 Oct 1916 on the Philadelphia. He listed his father, Pat Nolan from what looks like Kilgariff, Ballyhanie(sp). He was coming to his uncle John Nolan in NY. Does this match?
