Magee family of Tully House, Killeshandra

With regards to Church records, Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations:

• in local custody
• in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
• at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast.

PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody. It can be difficult to locate these as many congregations in the South have moved, amalgamated, or simply disappeared over the last sixty years. It seems that in the 2nd half of the 20th century Killashandra was amalgamated with other congregations into the Monaghan Presbytery:

I have since found that Charles Magee who went to British West Indies died 1854, at sea :o(

It is possible that my great great great great gradnfather Charles Magee, is buried at Cathedral of Kilmore, Killeshandra . This is where his daughter (my x3 great gradnmother) wanted to be buried and a family recollection is that the reason is because her father was buried there.  To date, have not found any transcripts for headstones from Cathedral of Kilmore, Killeshandra  (but we have been able to visit hers and my x3 great grandfather's resting place there)

Hullo my name is Peter Davis, my ggggrandfather Hugh Davis (1797?-1851)emigrated from Killashandra to Sydney Australia in 1853. his parents were Robert Davis & Eliza Armstrong. they were Presbyterians. It seems that here may be some connection to your Magees as they lived at Tullyhunco & some of the Davis family is located there in the 1841 census. I would be very interested to learn more about your family.

I'm afraid that I know so little of my Davis family, just what I shared in my opening note. Just haven't had any luck finding out more about them  :o(  Robert is also named in the esate announcement of William Magee (brother of my Eliza Magee). This was in 1878, so he was in Ireland at this time.

It is quite possible that we have a conneciton, but I just don't know enough  :o(

However ... you got me looking at the 1841 census.

There is a Thomas and Mary Davis listed with sons Henry & Robert Davis and an unnamed daughter in Laheen. Question is Laheen the same place as Laghan / Loughen?

If so, possibly a match!! (I'm a little excited as this is my best possiblity so far). Only thing is the age of Thomas and Mary. In William Magee's will he names his cousin Robert Davis of Laghan, County Cavan & his cousin Eliza Davis now residing in Laghan. A little later he names is AUNT Mary Davis of Laheen, County Cavan. I had assumed there was inconsistant spelling of the place names .... now I wonder. 

My other assumption (this is where the age comes in), is that since she is named his Aunt, that she is the sister of his father Charles Magee. You can find Charles Magee and his family in the 1841 census as well (Living in Tully). You will note that there is a large age difference of 41 years. However Margaret, Charle's wife would have a 23 year age gap with Mary. So if we have a match, then Mary Davis may rather be Margaret's sister ... the 23 year age gap is more reasonable.

I have not found anything to tell me what Margaret's maiden name was.

Do you know anymore of this Davis family, how they might connect with you?

I can't remember now..
We were just notified last week that the house itself is to become a "listed building"...

Hullo this is Peter Davis logging in its good to hear that Tully house is in good hands. I would also be curious regarding Thomas Davis & the 3 lives at Laheen. I believe Thomas is my gggrandfather Hugh's brother> Hugh emigrated to Australia c 1852 & 2 of Thomas's sons John & Henry also emigrated there. I believe the other brother Robert became a Baronial High Constable in Tullyhunco c1880.

Any other information on the Davis/magee connection would be very gratefully received, all teh best

So sorry for taking this long to respond back to you, I do have more information for you. Some of it is based on deduction and dna matches with my dad: 

Correction to this paragraph in my opening history to this thread: 

Charles was born about 1774 and died 26 Feb 1848. His father was James Magee Sr. and brother was James Magee Jr and sister was Mary Magee (Mary married  ? Davis and had two children: Eliza and Robert Davis of Loughen, Cavan).

My guess had been that "Mary Magee" was a sister of James Magee Jr who married a Davis (i.e. Mary Davis of Laheen) ... HOWEVER, I now am certain that she is actually the SISTER of Margaret (1792-1849) who was married to Charles Magee. I beleive that the sisters were both of the last name Davis, since the mother-in-law listed in the 1841 census extract that we have for the Laheen Davis family, is listed as Jane Davis. So Mary Davis married Thomas Davis, the parents of Robert, Henry, John and Eliza. 

Other researchers have found Thomas's parents to be Robert Davis and Agnes Armstrong.  Dad has DNA match with a family line from Thomas's sister, Margaret Davis who married John Naylor and then from another sister, Eliza Davis who married James Armstrong. These matches appear to indicate that the connections are correct. 

If you private message me, I can send you an invite to my tree. Does this corrolate with your research? I would love to see what you have for Robert's siblings and research for him as I have not found much more about him.

I like Peter decend down the Davis line my link is Eliza Davis and James Armstrong, they are my 2nd GGrandparents.

I have Eliza's parents as Agnes Armstrong and Robert Davis.

Agnes was living with Thomas Naylor  her grandson , son of Margaret Davis/ John Naylor.in the 1841 Census in house 7 in Laheen Tullyhunco.
