I am a descendant of Francis McAdam, whom I believe was born around 1830 in County Cavan, Drumlane, Mullanwary (?), and emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, USA.  He was married to Mary McDonald, born somewhere in Ireland - I don't know if they married in Ireland or in New York.  Any information on Francis McAdam would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your message.

There were a number of land divisions used in Ireland during the 19th century. The townland is the smallest official division-sometimes it might even refer to one field! Anyways, Mullanwary is a townland in the parish of Drumlane. (These land divisions can sometimes be confusing, if you would like to learn more about them you can do so at this link: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-land-divisions.html)

You could try looking at Church records for any information on Francis. Perhaps if you could find a birth or baptism cert it will give you his parents names, and from there you could search for possible siblings etc.

Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may help you is the Irishtimes. Here they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Drumlane, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cavan&parish=Drumlane&churchid=831

The Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) hold copies of all surviving Church of Ireland registers which cover the six counties of Northern Ireland, but they also cover some other counties including Cavan. Copies of the registers from the Republic of Ireland which were microfilmed by PRONI, are held by the Representative Church Body Library. http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history/family_history_key_sources.htm

Transcripts and some images of Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland parochial registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials pre-1900 are currently being uploaded free of charge at www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html.  However, this project is ongoing so not all records are available just yet.

Do you know much about Francis' emigration? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than departure. If you knew this it may be a place to find more information. The US Natioanl Library and Archives is a good place to start when looking at immigration information in the US. You can find this here:

Some other websites which may help you are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

I hope that some of these links help you find some information on Francis.

    Kind regards,
