it seems there are two books for drumgoon parish county of cavan

1828 tithe applotments first book county down drumgooland townland tullabrack tho ditcher on further searching the book where thomas ditcher name is written i discover the heading at the top of the page is diocese of kilmore parish of drumgoon county of cavan and i was wondering if the above named thom ditcher was here in 1828 rather than county down any assistance with this matter would be appreciated and any news on thomas dycher and his family

the second book

  • Hi William, I would agree, it looks like Tullybrick, Co Cavan, which is not too far from me, but I have never heard of the name Ditcher or any of its variations, I looked up the national archives in 1901 & there is no relevant family there.  However I dont recognise any of the family names there & at the bottom of the page in pencil it looks like "Antrim rent book", perhaps I am mistaken, could the landlord have property in both places & perhaps he was recycling his books, have you searched the griffiths valuation at http://www.askaboutireland.ie, i searched the name & it did not come up so perhaps search for the townland, drumgooland, co down & view the occupants.

I hope I have been of help & please come back & let me know how you got on & if you have further proof of persuing co Cavan please let me know.

Best wishes in your searches, Carmel O'Callaghan

thanks for telling me that so i went and checked it out and i have found my man and he is in cavan great news and he is from tullybrick just down the road from you and i know you can find out this mans history or story for me!!!!

it goes like this i checked griffiths valuation and looked up drumgoon cavan and tullybrick and at number 10 on the list i found thomas deneher but on looking at it first i thought it was deucher and on magnifying it -it turns out to look more like deuecher which is close to dycher for me and the following information

10 thomas deneher richard coote minor house office land 7 acres 3 rood 18 perch land £5;00;00 building £0;15;0 total £5;15s;00d

and it seems the whole page is from tullybrick as most names match up with tithes applotments book

which i need to ask you what is the w before his name in the tithe applotment book is it widower it seems there was quite a few in tullybrick widowers and widows that is

and that antrim rent book that you saw at the end of the page i had a look and reckon it is     got in rent book    as the whole page has light pencil figures in the margin from the original black ink used for the names area and rent charges

so the last thing i may ask you who is the landlord richard coote minor is he a cavan man and are there any rents books to look up around cavan or are they archived someplace else

thanks again for your assistance and look forward to the help of the cavan parishes in tracking this thomas down

  • Hi William,

Sorry, but I was looking up Tullybrick in Shercock, anyway yes I see your man in Griffiths, Tullybrick in Drumgoon, which is Cootehill, which is called after Mr Coote & his family, see attached link

no idea what the w means, I dont think it is widow/widower, it may be some sort of a reference/check mark by who ever is calling off the payments, perhaps the initial

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Coote,_1st_Earl_of_Bellomont

The Cootes are no longer landlords

What name are you searching?  is it Ditcher or Deneher

I searched the 1901 Census & there are 24 Denehers in Co Cavan & they are clustered in a few areas.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

Patrick Cassidy giving a lecture in Cootehill on Lord Belamont, I dont know if he knows anything about Rent Books, but I will send a message to Cootheill Library to see if they know anything , I will let you know when I hear from them..

  • Hi William,

CavanLibrary have a small rent roll on Bellamont estate for 1702, and   did not see anything for Ditcher  or Deneher. Griffiths is around 150 years later. That?s all that they have on Bellamont. They think there is material in the National Library on Bellamont Estate.  If you need more info, perhaps contact National Library, though I think to search for free you need to go there, but ask them anyway..

i am searching for dycher sometimes spelt dicher or deecher and its root is from ditcher

but the deneher in griffiths when looked at closely on the printed page could be deucher which phoenetically can be pronounced  dycher in that broad cavan accent that you possess up there

so if you find any other written records on deneher dycher dicher deecher ditcher from cavan let me know by return and if cootehill library have any additional information i will be glad to hear back from you

    for the record

1828 county down parish drumgooland townland drumrooghill but when the written document is looked at it states diocese of kilmore parish of drumgoon county of cavan drumroohill

which i think in 1857 becomes county cavan barony tullygarvey union cootehill parish drumgoon townland drumrooghill sheet no 17

which in 1901 becomes county cavan poor law union cootehill district electoral division east cavan barony tullygarvey parish drumgoon townland drumrooghill

hope this helps the cavan ireland xo parishes teams

  • William,

Is he in the 1911 Census? I have browsed some of the townlands but cant identify anything that seems like him.  You could send a letter to the Anglo Celt addressed to the editor,  linda@anglocelt.ie put in a phone number as I find people will ring you rather than emailing, you would get a greater audience than here.

  • Just to let you know that Jane Gilmore and Mary Deacher were in Drumrooghill townland which is adjacent to Tullybrick in 1901. They are no longer there in 1911

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Cootehill/Drumro…

in the same year the walker family were living in Tullybrick

    Hello

I live in Skerrig 3 miles from COOTEHILL

I sent you a message in 2015 but you mustn't of got it

I have DEMPSEY ancestors my great grandmother and also my grandmother. There are still at least 4 Dempsey families in this area

THE walker house still stands but Walkers left this area around 1920 I see an old post on another website a lady looking for Walkers back in 2003 I did send her a reply 2015 but I never heard anything back her branch of Walkers moved to Australia but she's on the right track as she mentions Tullybrick MAYO AND Cootehill in her post

I have never known who Denehers / Dechers ??? are they are not here now. There are still many Dempseys in this area . I have a lot of information a Dempsey relative of mine did a family tree many years ago.  There was a Henry Dempsey living in Skerrig in 1878 I have not been able to prove he is related to me Yet. he had 6 sons that I know of I have all their names .. I would have Cosgrove relations also they lived in Tullybrick.

Tullybrick and Mayo are our bordering townlands.

If you need information let me know

    Best Regards
