I am looking for information on the Malone family of Cootehill. I have names of Patrick Daniel Thomas and James all around 1789-1857

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The link below gives you a good indication of the spread of the name in mid-19th Century Ireland:

As you can see it's pretty widespread in the midlands and east of the country and in Ulster in the area around Co. Cavan. Are the names above siblings or parents and children, perhaps you could clarify for us? There are for example, 16 Malone listings in the parish of Drumgoon in 1857.

There is a Daniel Malone listed on rootsireland.ie baptised in Drumgoon on 12th Sept 1846 and born to parents Daniel Malone and Kitty McGeough. Owen Malone and Susan Malone are listed as sponsors. I don't know however if this is relevant to your search. There doesn't seem to be any other children to this couple.

Let me know what you think

    Best wishes

  • These are the same Malones I'm looking into, so I'd love to connect.

I believe the Patrick in the original post is my 3rd great-grandfather, and those are his brothers. I think the Daniel mentioned by Clare was born to that couple, and Thomas and Patrick had slightly differently phrased parents on the their baptismal records. I have Patricks parents as Donl Malone and Kitty McGrough and Thomas' as Daniel Malone and Catherine Magary, all in Drumgoon. I haven't found anything on James, but believe there are other brothers because of the spread of years.

I think Patrick, Thomas, and possibly Daniel also emigrated to Pennsylvania sometime around 1849, which is where they conect with the rest of my family tree. Thomas is mentioned as Patricks brother in his obituary years later.

Does anyone else have any insight into them? I found some names that match suggesting their parents may have originally come from Milltown in Westmeath, but don't have anything solid to make the connection, or know how likely it is they would have made a move like that.

  • Just wanted to add one recent find. It looks like the Tithe Applotment records were mis-classified for Aghagashlan, which is where I believe these Malones are from. In this National Archives link, they're listed in Drumgooland, County Down, but I when I clicked through to view the record, they're from Cavan.

The PDF linked below is that parish as of 1828, and I only see one Malone, on the very first line. Clare above also mentioned a 'Kitty McGeough' from baptism records, and there's a family named 'McGough' about halfway down the page.

If you want to look into it further, it looks like Cootehill was listed the same way:

I emailed the Archives to give them a heads up about the listing, but FYI in case this helps.
