My 2nd Great Grandfather Samuel Heaslip (1808 - 1894) and 2nd Great Grandmother Mary Reilly (1810 - 1896) left Ireland for Brisbane, Australia in 1863 under the name of Smith. In Australia they spelt their name as Heaslop. We don't know where Mary was born as we think the information on her death certificate is wrong.
It is said that cousins wanted to go to Australia and they were originally to go to Canada but the families swapped places. We can't prove this unless some Smiths in Canada come forward. Only one son stayed behind. He was John Heaslip who married Martha Pogue. I have met some of their descendants in Northern Ireland.
I have connected with a relative who owns the family home as a holiday house. I hope to visit again in 2025.
