Hello, I would greatly appreciate any help in researching my paternal ancestors, I have little information about them as I lost both my father and grandfather when I was quite young. One major anomaly  I have found is the two ways of spelling the surname, it appears to appear quite often without the 'e' which makes searching a bit of a pain! My father was born in Runcorn, my grandfather in Toxteth, but some of his brothers were born in Ireland, a lot of the family are buried in Toxteth Cemetry.

the 1911 census contains the fact he was born in Cavan - Name:James LinsterAge in 1911:56Estimated Birth Year:abt 1855Relation to Head:HeadGender:MaleBirth Place:Cavan, IrelandCivil Parish:Toxteth ParkCounty/Island:LancashireCountry:EnglandStreet address:118 Wellington Road LiverpoolMarital Status:MarriedOccupation:Police PensionerRegistration district:Toxteth ParkRegistration District Number:454Sub-registration district:Toxteth Park South WestED, institution, or vessel:7Piece:22234 Household Members: Name Age James Linster 56 Elizabeth Linster 55 George Linster 25 Thomas Linster 18 James Linster 15 Charles Linster 23

Jame and Elizabeth were married in 1878 Details: James Linster Date of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar 1878 Registration district: Cavan Volume:3 Page Number:103FHL Film Number:101253

I have been unable to establish any firm facts relating to James's parents,  my Great Great Grandfather, other than he was also James - except this - James Linster Estimated Birth Year abt 1821 Registration Year:1874 Registration Quarter:Apr-May-Jun Age at Death:53 Registration district:LiverpoolParishes for this Registration District:View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration DistrictInferred County:LancashireVolume:8bPage:178

I hope this information will help, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

  • The next step would be to order a copy of the 1878 marriage certificate as that should give you more information with which to search further in Ireland.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (which should be on the certificate, unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

When you get the marriage certificate, [post all the details on this board including fathers name and occupation, townland (address) etc and we?ll advise you on the next steps.
