I am looking for descendants of James Flood born 15 Aug 1820 in Rathgeran (my great great grandfather) and his brother Michael Flood born Sept 1828. (The 1905 obituary of James Flood noted he was born in "Rathgarren County Carlo". I believe the town name in the Obituary was spelled phonetically and is actually Rathgeran.) They both left Ireland at the same time and traveled together to the US in 1848. By 1860 they are both living in farms next to each other in Woodbury, Cumberland County, Illinois (this is near Effingham Illinois.) I don't know their parents names but am thinking their father's name was most likely John Flood since both named their first born sons - John. One John Thomas Flood and the other John Henry Flood. They were Catholic. Any additional information about their ancestors living or not living would be appreciated.
I have looked in the transcribed records online for the Borris Parish but did not find their records there. I have found the records in the Tithes for John Flood of Knockymullgurry. I have also seen the voter records for a John Flood in 1838 of Knockymullgurry. I have looked at the 1901 and 1911 Census records for Floods in Ballyglisheen. Any additional suggestions of places to look would be appreciated. Any connection with living Floods in the area would be appreciated too.

Hi,
Thank you for your message. You have done a great job of your family history so far! I hope that someone is able to help you further.
In the meantime have you tried looking at church records for more information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For St. Mullin?s parish, follow this link:
Here is a link to the parish office details of St. Mullins:

Hi Rosanna,
I have searched the Borris Parish records for James Flood b. 1820 and Michael Flood b. 1828.
First of all, I want to let you know that I could not find any Floods at all listed for Rathgeran townland in this time frame, 1820 -1830. However, there are Floods listed below from the nearby townlands of Ballyglisheen and Knockmulgurry.
I could not find anything for James b. 1820 because the Baptismal Register for Borris Parish for the years 1814 to 1825 was lost/destroyed, so there are no records for 1820. It is possible that the Flood family was living in Rathgeran when James was born and then moved to Ballyglisheen or perhaps that the children were born there and the family then moved to Rathgeran. Rathgeran is a much larger townland than Ballyglisheen.
The following is the only record for a Michael Flood, address given as Borris for 1828. (The spellings are as written).
Borris Baptisms 1825 to 1840
Name First Name Townland Year Mth Day Parents Names Sponsors Names Extra Data
Flood Michl. Borris 1828 1 28 James Flood & Ned Foly & -----------
Bridget Ryan Nancy Foly
Michael's siblings:
Flood Bridget ----------- 1830 9 25 James Flood & Thomas Riley & ------------
Bidy Ryan Ann Malone
Flood Bryan Ballyglisheen 1833 12 15 James Flood & James Corcoran & -------------
Biddy Ryan Nancy Dunne
Flood Patt Ballyglisheen 1839 5 5 James Flood & Matthew Corcoran & ------------
Bridgt. Ryan Mary Flood
If the names James, Michael, Bridget, Bryan or Pat run in your family, then there is a strong possibility that the above are the correct family.
Having made some enquiries locally, there are four Flood families currently living in Ballyglisheen, none of whom are related, (or the exact relationship to each other has been lost over time). I have been told that the best person to contact for family history is Paddy Flood, Ballyglisheen, Borris, Co. Carlow.
I hope this has been of some assistance to you.
Regards,
Bridie

Michael,
Joseph Flood was my grandfather the sibling to Lester. I am the family historian. I am going to Ireland in September to see their birth place and walk in the towns and visit their Church and graveyard. I had a recent DNA match on Ancestry to Kristin F. who is related to you. I am on Facebook with her. You can email me at rjhogarty at gmail dot com
If you are interested, I can connect you to the family who still lives in Illinois and still farms on the same land of James Flood and his children.
