I am trying to find out information about my paternal Great Great Grandfather and his family, His name was John Brown & I believe he was born in The Parish of Tartaraghan, County Armagh in 1791/1792 & that his father's name may have been William. His son Robert (born25/8/1833)left for Australia aboard the ship Ramillies in 1855 with his wife Mary Jane (Houghey). I also believe John may have been a weaver but other than that I have come up against a brick wall. If anyone out there can help it would be much appreciated.

Look forward to hearing more,

Aussie Brown

  • The births are before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864), so you need to rely on church records to trace baptisms and marriages. You don’t say what denomination the family was. Tartaraghan Church of Ireland parish records start in 1825, the Presbyterian records don’t start till 1853 and the RC records (RC parish of Loughgall) start in 1835. So unless the family is Church of Ireland there are no records back that far.

Finding a weaver’s family in the early 1800s is pretty difficult. They largely lived their lives below officialdom’s radar and so don’t appear in many records.

Statutory death registration started in 1864. So if John or his wife died before that you won’t find a death certificate. Only the Church of Ireland generally kept any burial records. Other denominations didn’t bother.

The surviving Church of Ireland records have been copied and are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line there and so a personal visit is required to view them.

  • Thank you for your swift reply, I think John died in 1853. I'm not sure about their denomination, all I do know is that John's son Robert, married Mary Jane Houghey at the Parish Church in the Parish of Tullylish, County Down on the 12 October 1854 according to the rites of the Church of England and Ireland. Not sure if this helps any further.

  • That's Church of Ireland. I am not aware that Tartaraghan's records are on-line so you would need to go to PRONI to look them up. (Or get a researcher to do it for you).

  • Thanks Elwyn, as I live in Australia, going to PRONI is not an option. Do you know what cost is involved in getting a researcher to look into it?

  • PRONI has a list of researchers on their website. You can approach them for precise costs but in my experience, most charge around £15 - £25 per hour.

  • Aussie brown, please see the comment I just posted in the Ancestors section of the Tartarghan parish board. It would work very well if John's father's name was William, because there was a William Brown there in Derrylileagh townland, Tartaraghan parisn in the 1864 Griffith's Valuation. So now I'm thinking that John, William and my GGG grandfather Samuel could very well have been brothers.

Hi Susan, I have had a lot of trouble finding information, but I am pretty sure John’s father was William and born approx 1770. I couldn’t see your post but it seems they could be. I would love to find out more.

  • My ancestors in Tartaraghan are CLULOW.  I have a book called "The Clulows of Tartaraghan" by James Clulow McAllester that lists the BMD of the Clulows in Armagh, New Zealand and Australia.  I looked and there does not appear to be any BROWN listed but if you have a connection to a CLULOW I am happy to look.  Ann Buchanan
