My GG Grandfather Daniel Smith was a native of Newry, he was born c. 1810. His father was George Smith.
In 1831 at the age of 21 Daniel, who was a labourer, enlisted at Malton, in the 14th Dragoons and was based in Hounslow. Sometime between 1831 and 1834 he married, the only name that I have for his wife, his first wife, is Fanny and she lived in Canterbury.
In 1834 Daniel departed Europe for Bombay and a tour of duty that lasted seven years, in 1841 he returned to England on the ship "Repulse"
Between 1838 and 1841 Daniel was widowed.
In 1841 he returned to India and in 1842 was discharged from the Dragoons to join the East India Company's Light Cavalry, where he rose to the rank of Sgt Major.
In 1846 he married for a second time,my GG Grandmother Elizabeth Ranger who was 13 yrs old, Daniel was 36. They had several children, their oldest son George Daniel was my G Grandfather.
Daniel was pensioned in 1858 and last received his pension in 1869. He never returned to Ireland nor did any of his descendants, until myself in 1972 with my Co.Wexford husband.
IF THERE ARE ANY SMITHS IN THE NEWRY AREA TO WHOM THIS MAKES AN IMPRESSION OR A CONNECTION, PLEASE,PLEASE CONTACT ME.
THANK YOU

Dear Zumeira,
1810 is a long time ago but you will be amazed how many people have knowledge of their family history, so who knows someone will respond.
I am in the process of creating an Ireland Reaching Out Facebook page where people from Newry but also Newry descendants can get in touch with eachother .
So if you are a Facebook user keep an eye out for Newry @ Ireland Reaching Out on Facebook

That is interesting. Family names are the only thread possible in this case. May I know the source of the information that you give, and perhaps some other siblings might have common first names. Thank you.
