Mitchell, William Srewart. I am trying to locate information about the ancestors of William. He was born in 1814, married Anna Maria Stevenson in 1839 (in Amagh), and arrived in Australia in 1840. His immigration details list his father as William (master sadler of the Ennis Killer Dragoons) and his mother as Margaret.

Hi Jax
The closest birth/baptism record on www.rootsireland.ie/ of William Mitchell with father William & mother Margaret in Armagh is 1822 The parish is ARMAGH C of I
I couldn't find a marriage record for William & Margaret
couldn't find any siblings of William jnr
I couldn't find a record of William senior's birth in Armagh
There are no Mitchells in Armagh in the Tithe Applotments
You might want to try PRONI and http://genidirect.gov.uk
I checked ancestry and there are 2 family trees which have William born 1809 in MONAGHAN
I checked the trees' attached record of NSW Assisted Immigrants and this is correct so I was barking up the wrong tree with Armagh!
Tried Monaghan for William jnr's birth but no luck there either!

The regiment that William, Master Sadler, worked for would have been the Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. It's a regiment that dates back to the 1600s. Their regimental museum is in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. You could contact the museum to see if they have any relevant records.

I am not certain, but I suspect that Master Sadler would be a civilian occupation, rather than a post held by a soldier. Could be wrong about that. I think I read somewhere that the farriers were also civilians. (Employed by the regiment but not soldiers as such).
