Jane Lewis who gives her birthplace as Market Hill, Ireland in the 1911 census for Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, UK.

Parents unknown but don't seem to be in 1851 UK census when Jane should be approx 11 years old.

I have read that it was in the parish of Mullaghbrack in 1832.

Birth approx 1838. Marriage to John Shackley (Born Carlisle) sometime before 1861 - possibly before 1857 when her son Joseph born in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

Links with Carlisle and Bishop Auckland.

Any help on migration to certain areas of UK around this time helpful or help on where to search her birth (no experience in searching Irish Ancestry .... yet!)

Many thanks.

  • Thank you so much for your fantastic response! I'm sure that is going to help me tremendously. I don't have any experience in researching Irish records as yet but I shall be brushing up on it very soon by the looks of things.
Many thanks once again for you super-quick response. I'm happy to help with any English / Welsh records if I am able through my 'Ancestry' membership (it's poor on Irish records.)

Just one further thought ...... Do Irish birth records only give the father's name and not the mother's also?

    Many thanks,

  • They usually have the mother's name but not in this case I'm afraid.

I couldn't find a marriage record for a William that might have given her name to us either.

Armagh records don't appear in the Irish Census until 1851 & there are no Lewises in Armagh
