Hi, I have a record of my 3 x great grandfather being baptised in this parish in 1789. I have also seen other Moles family names on the registers of this parish.  Looking for anything at this stage.  Will be visting in three weeks.

regards

  • Jacqui,

Moles is not a common name in Co Armagh. Looking at the 1901 Irish census there were just 3 households there, a total of 6 people, (and only 124 Moles throughout the whole of Ireland):

All were Church of Ireland. None living in Magheralin parish in the 1901 census.

  • Sorry to be late.  I have Moles from Clare, Tullylish Parish, Co Down.  Oliver Moles was said to own a mill and I have no idea if this is the family exagerating or not. There is something mentioned in rosdavies as "Tenant oof 3 mills in 1836".  "They were a fine family" was what was passed down in my family.  His wife was Mattie. One of the daughter, Molly,  married into my    Robert Adamson family of Ballydougan, Tullylish Parish.  This was the Robert who died about 1846-8 and is buried with his wife and a child at Newmills Presbyterian Church. I have begun to pull records of Moles from Donaghcloney COI and Knocknamuckley, but it sounds like you also have them.

Joseph Moles of Clare had kids James b 1793, Edward, Robert and William. James m. Elizabeth Gaskin and dau Margaretta m. Joseph Heaney may be in Ballymacanallen 1901, but kids born in Ballynagarrick.  Dau Betty m. John Davison at Knocknamuckley and I'd have to check if he were a Ballygargan man. Dau Ruth m. David Thompson at knocknamuckley and there were at least 5 kids. I could not find son Robert.  Another Moles named James m. Margaret Chambers and lived in Bleary with at least 5 kids. Another Moles was William m. Hannah and lived in Bleary. Wm Moles b 1841 m. Sarah and lived at Bleary and had 4 children.

I have a bunch of other Moles I was trying to develop into a tree.  Who are you interested in specifically?

  • There are Moles dating back to 1697(dau of James of Waringstown)  in Donaghcloney records with a wife Catherine of John dying in 1711 and a Catherine of marriagabe age in 1699.  By the time Moles are in Bleary, the name is often written as Moulds.  Other Moles seem to continue in Moygannon under the name Moles. I would search on both spellings.  There are fairly recent graves at Knocknamuckley, so descendants are probably about.  You might want to ask at Facebook, North Armagh Family History ... as several people are from that area.  I can't easily access most of my Knocknamuckley  records for about 2 weeks, but have pulled many early Donaghcloney records.
