Our ancestor's name was Theodore Dominick Thaddeus O'Kelly, he was born in Loughgall around 1658. He actually spelled it "Lochgal". He came from the kingdom of Ulster to Guatemala in the late 17th. century. He was an army surgeon. In Guatemala, In 1699, Dr. O'Kelly was involved as the Guatemalan army's surgeon in the expedition against the last Mayan kingdom of Peten-Itz?, launched jointly by Guatemalans and Yucatecos. His sons were Ignatius (a mercedarian priest), Balthassar (our ancestor), and Patrick Andrew (who also has offspring).

So far, we have not been able to connect Dr. O'Kelly back to his ancestors in Ireland.

  • Hi,

Thanks very much for your message. You are very lucky to be able to trace your family history back so far! Unfortunately, it is difficult to connect someone like Theodore to his Irish ancestors given the very early period in which he lived. The reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist.

It may be an idea to contact Armagh Ancestry to see if they can assist in any way, however a fee may apply. Here is their email:

Hopefully they may be able to assist.

    Kind regards,
