Hello,

I am searching for relatives and family background for my Great Grandfather William McGivern who lived in and around Poyntzpass/County Down

I believe his parents were Francis McGivern and Elizabeth Purdy but I am not 100 percent positive

I have found him in the 1901 and 1911 cencus along with his family

Here is what I know:

Durung the cencus period the lived in House 12 and or 5 Drumbanagher and the parrish was listed at the time was Killevy

My Grandmother (Sarah Ann ) was baptised in the Parrish of Drumbanagher in 1896.

I am looking to connect with relatives and discover mor about my Irish heritage.

    I found an 1893 civil marriage index record for a William McGivern and an Anne Poyntz in the Newry registration district which includes Killevy civil parish. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1893. Instructions for obtaining a copy from the GRO are below the index record.

    Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • At Drumbanagher Parish Church there is a war memorial to two McGivern men who died in 1914-18 war.

    They both served in Royal Irish Fusiliers.

    1. Robert McGivern and

    2. William McGivern

    The william aged 14 in 1911 may be the same William on the memorial as he would have been 17 years old at outbreak of WW1.

    LDS records confirm that the head of this family William was born on 8th May 1868. His father was Francis and mother was Elizabeth Purdy. This is fairly accurate as two of the children are named after their grandparents.

    Concerning Robert McGivern. PRONI give one hit for a family (Presbyterian)  in Tullyhappy which is quite close to Drumbanagher and it could be that rather than brothers Robert and William might have been cousins of similar age at outbreak of ww1 and joined the Irish regiment together.
