I'm trying to extend my research into John Beatty, born circa 1785 and his wife Eliza (nee Holmes) and would like to know if anyone has information about burial plots or gravesites in the area of Clonfeacle, Tyregerty or Blackwatertown that might match my ancestor. John had a son Hugh Beattie born circa 1817 who migrated to Australia in 1841 with his wife Mary (nee Rolston), I believe his father was also called Hugh (wife not known). John also had a brother James Beatty.

The family were staunch Wesleyan faith and were very involved in the Wesleyan/Methodist church. John had farming land in or near clonfeacle.

That's all I can provide, I was hoping to get to Ireland to do some searching but Covid has put an indefinate hold on that.

  • Going by the Ulster Historical Foundation’s website, the 3 most probable graveyards within Clonfeacle parish are: Clonfeacle Old (townland of Tullydowey), Clonfeacle Church of Ireland (in Benburb) and Gorestown (in Gorestown).

    I note you say that the family were staunch Methodists. However Methodism hadn’t got started as a separate denomination in Ireland in the early 1800s (mainly because many members did not want to break with the Church of Ireland) so in the period that you are looking at the family will have attended the Church of Ireland for baptisms and marriages and they may be buried there too.  There are 2 Methodist churches in the parish one at Blackwatertown and the other in the Moy. Neither has any records before 1874 (and that will be because until that date they were still using the Church of Ireland). A few Methodist churches have their own graveyards but most Methodists just use the Church of Ireland or other public graveyards.

    John, in case you don't have it, the attached page about James Beattie's church at Blackwatertown might be of interest. My records show John Beattie's (1785-1833) wife was Elizabeth Holmes and that he had a brother James (DOB-DOD unknown). I don't have any further information on Elizabeth or John's father, Hugh (1747-1839). I'd be interested to learn of John's (1785) siblings, his father and his mother.

    Findmypast.com has a number of Beatty records in the Crossle Genealogical Abstracts, (Parcel 1A 32 15, v. B cont.) Beatty notebooks, v. 6-12. Source Armagh Wills. I recently found an abstract of John's will while looking for Holmes records.

    Will of John Beatty of Terogerty, parish of Clonfeckle, Co. Armagh dated 5 Feb 1785: son Hugh, son William, son-in-law Joel Bates, son-in-law Samuel Holaday, wife Mary Beatty als Holmes, daughters Elizabeth and Sarah, son John. Appoint wife Mary, son Hugh, and William McCormick as executors. Witnessed by Samuel Bates, William McCormick and Hugh Robinson
