My Goodfellow ancestor born in Armagh was James Goodfellow, born about 1794 in Cullyhanna, Armagh.  He married Mary Perry.  They were married in 1811 in Cullyhanna.  He died in 1847 in Cullyhanna.  The notes I have say that the original Goodfellow ancestors lived in Scotland.  In the 1640's the went from Scotland to Northern Ireland (Ulster Province, Armagh County) and lived in the town land of Cullyhanna near Newtownhamilton.  James and Mary Peery's son, Joseph Goodfellow, born 1812 in Cullyhanna was my direct ancestor as well (ggg-grandfather).  He died in Dorchester, NH in 1908 having married Ann Meikle in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Would love to know if any Goodfellows remain in the area.  I have a picture of what is to be the old Goodfellow homeplace in Northern Ireland, sent to me by realtives in Ontario Canada.  I would like to find out if it is still standing.

  • Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists a Samuel Goodfellow in Cullyhanna Big. He had plot 41 which was a 9 acre farm.

In 1901 Samuel is still listed (born c 1815). The family were Presbyterian:

Samuel died 8.3.1905 aged 86, of bronchitis. His son Robert was the informant.

    1911:

Some probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site:

Goodfellow Robert of Cullyhanna county Armagh farmer died 16 March 1928 Administration Belfast 12 February to Robert Goodfellow junior farmer. Effects £33.

Goodfellow Alice Anne of Cullyhanna county Armagh spinster died 12 May 1933 Probate Belfast 26 June to James Berry Moore farmer. Effects £109 5s.

The above probate files should be in PRONI in Belfast in paper format.

I looked in the current phone book for the area (postcode BT35). There are a couple of Goodfellows but they are ex-directory cannot put you in touch. The electoral register may have more information but you have to pay to view that.

There were a couple of Goodfellow farms in Creggan parish in the 1828 tithes, but none listed for Cullyhanna. Possibly the family moved there from an adjacent townland in the mid 1800s:

Looking at the maps on Griffiths Valuation, you should be able to see where plot 41 is in Cullyhanna Big. However, when I search tonight, the site is down so I can’t give you any additional guidance, but in general it’s usually pretty easy to find each farm using the contemporary and modern maps together.

There are still some Goodfellows living near/in Belfast, descendants of a Samuel Goodfellow. The house was still standing in March this year, but is due for demolition - windows boarded up and part of the house and outbuildings demolished.

Thomasina Goodfellow b at Cullyhanna in 1925 my mother in law, is living, now in Lancashire. She has 2 sons. Her brother Robbie's 3 children, my husband's cousins still live in Ireland. We all met up in March this year in Belfast. Great fun.

    Thomasina b 1925 d/o Robert Goodfellow 1898 - 1989 b Cullyhanna + Eveline Florence Henry 1904 - 1977 b Tullyvallen

    Robert Goodfellow s/o Robert Goodfellow b 1865 + Thomasina Moore b Castleblaney

Robert Goodfellow s/o Samuel Goodfellow b abt 1816 Cullyhanna + Anne Ruddick b Co Down

    Samuel Goodfellow s/o Samuel Goodfellow b abt 1785 Cullyhanna + ?

Perhaps Samuel and James were brothers or cousins?
