Hello, I'm trying to find any clues to records for Bernard CAMPBELL, born about 1826 in County Armagh.

The birthdate and location are based on RIC records: he was aged "20 years" at the time of enrollment on 17 March 1846.

He was recommended by Thomas DOBBIN, who I'm hoping would have been a prominent citizen of Bernard Campbell's parish in County Armagh.

Any clues regarding either a parish or family for Bernard Campbell, or even a parish for Thomas Dobbin, both of the early-mid 19th century would be appreciated.

Bernard seems to have settled in County Kerry after retiring from the RIC (e.g. in Listowel in 1901).

Thank you in advance for any clues or tips you may be able to provide.

Jay

  • Hi Jay,

The only record of a birth of Bernard Campbell in Armagh on www.rootsireland.ie/ is a baptism in 1838

    There are also 6 baptisms / births for Thomas Dobbin in Armagh: 1720, 1839, 1869, 1891, 1904 & 1913

It costs to view the full record on rootsireland but it will give you the father's name and the parish

In the Tithe Applotments (free to search online) there are 34 Campbells in Armagh in 1827 so if you got the father's name & parish on the birth record you might find where they were in 1827

There are no Dobbins in the Tithes however.

  • Hi Jay, A Thomas Dobbin is listed as a magistrate in County Armagh according to "The Dublin Almanac..", 1847. I known a Dobbin family were also landlords. Some of their records can be found in LDS microfilms. I believe their rentals were either in Keady or Armagh. I am also researching a Bernard Campbell. This Bernard was born c.1792 and died in 1872. He is buried in Drumhillery Presbyterian churchyard. I believe he lived in the Derrynoose(near Keady) or Tynan parish areas. He has no known children named Bernard. Any possible connections between your Campbell's and this one? Do you know any other relatives? Dean
