Hello, I am trying to trace a Mary Telford, born 1890 to Thomas and Agnes Telford, Antrim.  I can find her in the 1901 and 1911 Irish census, but no other info. I have tried marriages, deaths, and immigration records, but can not find a lead. Any ideas where to search. The only other piece of info I have comes from her brother Joseph's death notice , 1965, California, and she is Mary White. Many thanks,

Gail Smith.

  • Gail,

Using the information in the 1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Donegore/Moyadam/111892/

Mary’s parents were Thomas Telford and Agnes Smith who married in Kilbride Church of Ireland on 12.11.1881. Mary was born 24.8.1890 at Moyadam:

I can see a marriage between a Mary Telford and a John White registered in Newtownabbey on 18.2.1927. Have you looked at that certificate? You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

  • Hi Elwyn, I checked out this lead for Mary Telford, and bingo!, it is the right person. I was also able to find the death of her sister Sarah that had eluded me.  Another question, there was a marriage for Agnes Telford and Hugh Hilditch Todd 26/04/1929, which I looked at. What interested me was the name Agnes Telford and the names Hugh Todd and Agnes Telford/Todd appearing on some family certs. First I thought my g/grandmother may have re married, but not so as she was still a Telford when she died 1937.  Agnes gave her father as Thomas Telford deceased on her marriage cert,. This got me thinking, in 1911 census at the home of Thomas and Agnes Telford, there is a 3 year old child Agnes Gilpin Smyth, relation.(Smyth was Agnes snrs maiden name). I was able to trace this childs birth 25/04/1907 Belfast. She was the daughter of Mary Smyth unmarried. Mary, looking back is the niece of Agnes Telford. I then found out that Mary died. Is it possible the Telfords adopted Agnes and on her marriage cert she is Agnes Smyth Telford.,or was she able to just take on the name. Thank you so much for your help.

    kind regards,

    Gail.

  • Gail,

There were no adoption laws in the UK before 1927 (and it was the 1950s before they were introduced in the Republic of Ireland).  Prior to that all adoptions were informal arrangements often with little or no paperwork. The adoptive family just changed the child’s surname and that was it. So it would have been an easy matter for the Telford family to have changed Agnes’s surname. And UK law allows you to use any name you want anyway, provided it is not for a criminal purpose.  It’s still very easy to change your name if you wish.

If you want to trace these families forward, you are probably going to have to go into PRONI (or get someone else to do that for you) to check for births. Births within the past 100 years are not on-line on the general GRONI website, but you can search them in PRONI, right up to events registered yesterday.

Likewise deaths within the past 50 years and marriages within the past 75. The other thing to search for are wills.  The probate records from 1966 onwards are not on-line but are in PRONI, in paper format. They can be an easy way to find out what living relations a person had and where they lived. And they often give you a married daughter’s new surname.  If you are unable to go yourself, you could employ a researcher. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net
