Hi

I am looking for any relatives of Andrew Mooney born 1810.  He marries Jane Galloway.  One of their sons, William Mooney, born 1848 Kirkinriola is my x2 great grandfather.  They also have a daughter Margaret.

Thank you.

  • Theresa,

The RC baptism records for Kirkinriola give William’s parents as living in Broughshane in 1848. That’s a couple of miles east of Ballymena. That parishes records only start in 1848 so any children born in that parish before that won’t be listed.

There is a tree on Ancestry which lists this family.  (Smith family). It has other siblings to William 1848: Jane 1837, Mary 1841, Margaret 1849, Andrew & James.  It has marriages and other information on the family. Some seem to have stayed in Ireland and others moved to Scotland. Son William died in England in 1923.

Andrew senior appears to have died in Helensburgh in 1875. Jane Galloway died on 1.1.1878 in Glasgow.

  • Good Morning Elwyn,

Thank you so much for your reply.  The Smith family tree is my tree on Ancestry.  I have been researching for about 10 years now but cannot seem to move any further forward.  Are the RC records of Kirkinriola availale on line do you know?  I am hoping that some of my family may still be in the Broughshane area.  You never know your luck!!

    KInd regards Theresa

  • Theresa,

Yes the parish records are on-line free. They are on the national library site:

    https://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

(Your William Mooney happens to be the very first baptism in the Kirkinriola register).

Your Andrew appears to have been a gardener from what I read on the family tree. They tended to move around a bit to follow available work (often working on big estates). They can be quite hard to track. And even harder if there are no parish records to check.

Kirkinriola is the RC parish around Ballymena. I have attached a map showing the various adjacent parishes in case you want to check them too.

The parish priest for Kirkinriola did a census of the parish in the 1880s. It is certainly in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. Not sure if it’s on the nli site. Might be worth checking.  It’s a common surname though. Difficult to sort one Mooney family from another.

Andrew Mooney born 1810 had a son Andrew 1822-1923 who had a son James 1863-1942 who also had a son called James 1894-1981, who was my grandfather. I have not been able to trace any further back

                                      Regards

After further investigation I now do not believe that the Andrew Mooney born 1810 was a relative as he and his wife would have only been 12 years old when they had their son Andrew. There was a discrepancy in the birth year of Andrew (who Margaret Scullion) I have found out that he was born in 1822 as he died in 1923 at the age of 101
