I am looking for any information relating to the McCune family who lived in the Killead parish. Particularly Samuel McCune whose parents may have been William James & Frances McCune.

  • Is this your family in 1851:

William J McCune is listed in Griffiths for 1862. He was on plot 18 which was a 16 acre farm.

According to the PRONI revaluation records, he was replaced as tenant in 1879 by James Sutherland.

There were no McCunes in the townland by the time of the 1901 census.

You don’t say what denomination but going by the majority of McCunes in Co Antrim in the 1901 census, they were probably Presbyterian. Killead Presbyterian has records from 1826, Loanends Presbyterian from 1834 (with gaps). Copies in PRONI in Belfast.

  • Thanks Elwyn,

Don't have a lot of information to go on but now you have pointed me in the right direction I will continue the search. I know they were in the North East of England by the end of the 1800's and are in the 1891 census. I will now begin to look for marriage certificates etc to broaden the search.

    Thank You

  • Steve,

Statutory registration of marriages started in Ireland in April 1845 (save for RC which commenced on 1.1.1864). Births and deaths were registered from 1.1.1864. Prior to that you need to rely on church records, not all of which are on-line. You may need to get someone to look them up in PRONI.

No McCunes listed in the tithe applotment records for 1827 for Aughnamullan. (Most farmers would be listed in the tithes). There were two McCune farms in the parish at that time. Widow McCune in Stradhavern, and William Macoun in British townland.
