I am trying to research my own family tree and looking around this area but cant seem to find my Great Grandfathers parents His name was Robert James Adams.

He married Annie Hood Taggart in 1896 and they moved to Bentra , near Larne and are on both the 1901 and 1911 census as living there.

On the wedding certificate it looks like the father of Robert James Adams is T H Adams or J H Adams. I can find Thomas Hugh Adams around this period but cannot find any link to suggest Robert James is his son . I have tried looking out all births .

Wedding certificate says Robert James was living in Rokeel at time of marriage and that his father was a farmer.

Any help would be appreachiated

  • Thomas Hugh Adams of Rokeel was married to Isabella Fleck. She had triplets on 29.12.1866. 2 males and 1 female. None were named at the time, so that probably explains why you can’t find Robert James’ birth. You would need to check the church records for his baptism to confirm it’s the right family. But I suspect it is from his address when he married and the father’s initials.

  • I Elwyn thanks for the reply , I have been down that road and I thought I had found that link but unfortunatly it seemed to be a dead end. The Thomas Hugh and Isabella also registered three deaths so it looks like the triplets died.

This Thomas Hugh certainly fits the area and time frame etc .

There is a picture of his headstome on ancestry. I have found him and Isabella registering other births but none connecting them to Robert James

there also seems to be a Thomas Hugh Adams up around Glenwherry married to a woman Graham I think from memory but again I can find no connection to Robert James . His age could have been wrong and maybe he was born before 1864

    Thansk so much for replying

  • Have you tried searching church baptism records? Probably involves a trip to PRONI.

  • Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so the West Church may not necessarily be the Adams family church (though it could be). West Church’s baptisms start in 1829 (which is possibly around the time the church was established). Ballymena 1sts start in 1812 and 2nds in 1813. Obvious other Presbyterian churches to try in that area are Broughshane 1st (records from 1827) and Buckna (records from 1836). I’d start with 1st Broughshane as there’s numerous Adams graves there including this gravestone:

Erected, by, Ellen Adams, of Rokeel, in memory of, her father Thomas Adams died 26th April 1845 aged 62 years also her mother Anne Adams died 10th March 1892 aged 82 years her sister Margaret Adams died 24th April 1854 aged 21 years her brother Matthew Adams died 5th October 1873 aged 45 years Also the above named Ellen Adams who died 19th Oct 1907 aged 75 years 'blessed are the dead which die in the Lord' Rev XIV. 13

Hi Bazboy 166, Just noticed today that you had replied to my Glenwherry Ancestors post in November 2017. I have a Thomas Hugh Adams of Rokeel born 17/11/1815 in my tree, married to Mary Graham with sons John James and Robert Thomas amongst others. I can give you more information if it is of any use to you, Shauna
