My grandmother's paternal grandfather is Hugh Alexander Hart 1808-1893. He lived on Bluefield Farm. Wife was Jane Poag (1824-1903).  Father was Alexander Hart. I am having difficulty with information about Alexander and his wife (Jane?) and their history.  I have found the Griffith Land valuations and there are many Harts listed.

FYI - My grandmother Isabel Hart 1898-1992; her father (Hugh's son) was Robert Allen Hart 1851-1910

I have an album from my grandmother with photographic portraits from her father's family.  Most of the people I am unable to identify.

Thanks for any guidance.

  • Here’s Hugh’s probate abstract:

The Will of Hugh Hart late of Bluefield North East Division County of the Town of Carrickfergus Farmer who died 25 October 1893 at same place was proved at Belfast by William Mann of Marshaltown Carrickfergus Farmer and Thomas M'Allister of Cloughland Carrickfergus Farmer the Executors.

The will itself is on-line on the PRONI will site, and mentions his son William (who was to inherit the farm), daughter Maggie and daughter Alexandrina Jack and her son Hugh Jack.

    Here’s the family in 1901:

    1911:

William died in 1916. Here’s his probate abstract. The full will is not on-line but should be in PRONI in paper format.

Probate of the Will of William Hart late of Bluefield Carrickfergus County Antrim Farmer who died 22 June 1916 granted at Belfast to Thomas G. Robinson Flesher and Hugh Hart Jack Farmer

You say that Hugh Alexander’s wife Jane died in 1903. However his death certificate shows him to be a widower. So she pre-deceased him. 2 possible deaths registered in Larne. One in 1865 aged 52, and the other in 1880 aged 81. Neither of those deaths is free to view on-line so you would need to pay to view them on the GRONI site to see if either is the correct one.

Can’t see Hugh & Jane’s marriage in the civil indexes so they probably married pre 1845 when registration began. You would need to search church records in PRONI to find them.

Hugh’s farm was plot 143 in North East Division. It was 37 acre farm. He is listed there in Griffiths in 1861. A housing estate has been built on the land today, and the modern Tudor Rd, Carrickfergus runs through the farm.

  • Thank you, Elwyn.

I do have both the 1901 and 1911 census records as well as the will of William Hart.

I appreciate the correction on Hugh's wife Jane's date of death.  I had the wrong date attached. I do not see Hugh Hart's death certificate.  Is that available to me?

I found a listing in the Belfast newspaper from Feb 1833 listing the wedding of Hugh Hart and Jane Poag. I suspect that is a match. But, then I must have Jane Poag's birthdate wrong as well - she wouldn't have been born in 1824. And, the newspaper listing says that Hugh is the son of "the late Captain Hart of Bluefield" but my research shows that Alexander Hart would have been alive then. It lists Jane Poag as the "third daughter of Capt Poag of Carrickfergus."

I very much appreciate the information about the farmland today.  I want to visit!

  • Janet,

The death certificate can be seen on this site:

    https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

They only have deaths from 1891. For deaths 1864 to 1890, you need to view them on the GRONI site. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

There was another Hart family in North East Division, and so perhaps some of the information you have relates to the 2nd family?

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Carrickfergus_Rural/North_East_Division/991824

PRONI hold a lease relating to the Hart family:

Counterpart Lease for 61 years. Rent £7. 11. 0. Marquis of Donegal to Hugh Hart North East Division of Carrickfergus (farmer). 20 acres, 1 rood, 32 perches, in North East Division of Carrickfergus.

  • https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ This site doesn't have Carrickfergus records. Is there another site to see Hugh Hart's death certificate?

  • Found it! Under civil records.  Thank you!

  • There is a lady on Ancestry researching the same family. Her name is Stephanie Gaye.

She has some good information and some photos as well.  Can I put you in touch perhaps?

  • :) Stephanie is my daughter and our ancestry tree is under her name.  But, I'm the one working on it these days.  We do have lots of information from a combination of my grandmother's records and online research.  I just can't seem to get further back than identifying Hugh Hart's parents.

  • I am happy to share any info and photos I have on the Hart family.
