The civil parish of Kilcolagh (near Ballinameen) is in the barony of Frenchpark in North Roscommon. Kilcolagh was in the Poor Law Union of Boyle and the Registrar's District of Ballinameen. It's Electoral District or DED is Kilcolagh. It is bounded by Tibohine to the far west, Estersnow to the north, Creeve, Killummod and Killukin to the east, and Kilmacumsey to the south.

CIVIL RECORDS

Kilcolagh is unusual in that it comprises two land clusters which were separated by the northern arm of the civil parish of Kilmacumsy. (Parts of 'Kilcola' also cross over into various Roman Catholic parishes).

The www.leitrim-roscommon.com website is also very handy for pinpointing where exactly the townland of your ancestors is located.

It is particularly helpful to note whether a townland sits on the boarder of another parish (meaning you should not ignore a search there also). With this at hand, you can make a lot more sense of the Catholic Parish Registers, which began in 1811 for Croghan. List of townlands: Kilcolagh (civil)

Ballinameen's  "Civil Registration District" was generally BOYLE but don't rule out CARICK-ON-SHANNON, STROKESTOWN or ROSCOMMON (to discover a more recent relative who may have died in any of those hospitals).

CHURCH RECORDS

Roman Catholic:   The RC Parish of "Ballinameen" (Diocese of Elphin) today, was originally part of the Parish of Killukin & Killummod aka "Croghan" up until 1859.

From 1811, the "Catholic Parish of Croghan" (Diocese of Elphin) historically known as Killucan & Killummod, included the townlands in the "Civil parish of Kilcoalgh" (no townland address recorded).

Unfortunatley the Catholic Parish registers did not record the townland address of couples EXCEPT for a small window during the periods from May 1815 up to Sep 1816 (BAPTISMS only) and from Jan 1829 until June 1833  (MARRIAGES only - but good for cross referencing against Tithe Applotment Records).   

From 1859 the "Catholic Parish of Ballinameen" (Diocese of Elphin) kept records for townlands within the "Civil parish of Kilcolagh" (no townland address recorded).
