ORIENTATION
The civil parish of Kilcolagh is in the barony of Frenchpark, in north Co. Roscommon and covers an area of 29.2 km². It is part of district now known as the Plains of Boyle which was previously the Mac Dermott kingdom of Moylurg [Maigh Luirg].
It is unusual in that it comprises a western and eastern segments, separated by the northern arm of the parish of Kilmacumsy. It has two population centres: Ballinameen (located halfway between Croghan and Frenchpark) and Lurgan (further west, at Frenchpark). The R370 road from Frenchpark to Carrick-on-Shannon runs through this parish, crossing the N61 from Tulsk to Boyle in the eastern segment of Kilcolagh.
The Breedogue, Bella, Mantua and Carricknabraher rIvers run through this parish. It was once home to the lake of Loughbally, now disappeared.

KILCOLAGH'S CATHOLIC PARISH
The Catholic Parish of "Croghan" aka Killucan aka Killukin comprised a part of Kilcola (i.e. the eastern-most townlands of Rathallen, Runnaboll, & Kilcolagh) along with
The Catholic Parish of "Ballinameen" aka Kilnamanagh & Estersnow also comprised Kilmacumsey and most of Kilcola. Its chapels included Ballinameen (at Knockglass) and Breedogue (at Cloonacarrow). Ballinameen RC records begin in 1835.
POPULATION
In 1824, the parish of Kilcolagh comprised 1,798 acres and was home to 1,924 inhabitants.
