The study of local government in Ireland has suffered from the attraction of national politics. The small proportion of books
dealing specifically with local authorities compared with their national big brother has arguably diminished the important role
that local government has played in shaping Ireland.
For the first time, A History of Castlebar: Municipal Government 1613-2014 comprehensively records the history of
urban government in Castlebar, County Mayo, and logs the contribution to civic life made by so many public representatives.
The work provides detailed accounts of each authority’s functions, elected membership, successes and challenges against the
backdrop of national politics. In doing so, the history of Castlebar town itself emerges.
Noel Campbell is a native of Castlebar. He is a former elected member of Castlebar Town Council (2004-09) and graduate of
NUI Galway (history) and UCD with a keen interest in local history.
Details of the very successful launch of the book, held in Castlebar Court House and launched by An Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny TD, can be found below;
