Rathkeale is a town in west county Limerick. It is located 30 km southwest of Limerick city, the river Deel flows through the town. The name Rathkeale is Rath Caola in Irish, meaning Caola's ringfort.
The town consists of one long and wide street running East to West. The trade of the town was based on agriculture. There were two flour mills. Matrix Castle stands on the banks of the river Deel about a mile from the town. It has extensive views of the country including the Shannon river and the Clare and Tipperary mountains.The population of the Parish in 1841 was 8,293 inclusive of 4,261 inhabitants of the town.
