Edward Woods died in 1901 in Oswego, New York. His obit says that he is from Tipperary. I believe that 5 Woods siblings lived in Oswego. In the 1860 US Census for Ward 2 of the City of Oswego, the census taker, G. W. Harman, included extra info in the birthplace column. Normally there would only be country for foreign borns.

For Edward and many others in that census, their birthplace looks like some variation of Duprane or Dupraire or Dupain Ireland. In 2 instances, Duperane or Duprain is preceded by “Co” (for County?). I have listed below everyone in G. W. Harman’s district who was born in Duprane, etc. I have attached a sample page from the census.

Name                     Age      Birthplace

Patrick OGorman     36      Duprane or Dupraire or Dupain Ireland

Patrick Woods         30       Duprane or Dupraire or Dupain Ireland

James Doughin       30                 “

*Margaret  “             33                 “

*Anna Hogan          20        Duprane or Dupraire Ireland

*John Woods          23        Duprane or Dupraire Ireland

Bridget Stuart         38        Co Duperane Ireland

Mary Broderick       19        Dupraine Ireland

*Patrick Woods       31        Co Duprain or Duprane Ireland

Mary         “             29                   "

Ann           “               9                  “

*Edward Woods      26         Duprain Ireland

*Probable siblings – obit for Edward Woods indicates that he is from County Tipperary, Ireland

Any ideas where these folks were born? Any knowledge of the Woods family?

THANK YOU,

Dennis Hogan

  • Hi Dennis,
I think the census taker was writing something that sounded like "Dup-rairi," which is what he heard when "Tipperary" was said with an Irish accent.

  • This could possibly be the Ann in the 1860 census, and her parents. Note one of the sponsors is a Hogan, which is a name on the census.

  • Patricia. THANK YOU for your help.  The pronunciation issue makes sense and I will follow through on the Ann Woods info.
