Hi

I am looking for any information about a property named Willowbrook in Timolin, the property isn't there anymore but it was a substantial property with its own lake and gatehouse. Please see the attached Griffiths Valuation map for the location

Regards

Peter

  • Peter, "Landed Estates Data Base @nuiGalway has a 4 line entry on a Willowbrook House in the Barony of Carbury, Co. Kildare. Apparently it burned down accidentally in December 1867. The ruin is till visible." Ref. "McTernan". Is this the property you are inquiring about? Griffith's Valuations recorded an Andrew McCullough leasing property from Mrs Ormsby Gore and in 1906 a Lord Harlech was leasing property in Willowbrook. Regards,

  • Peter, The Griffith's Valuation map did not come through. You might please give the name of the townland and the occupier. The information I posted refers to County Sligo! Regards,

  • McCoy Thank you for the reply and information. This Willowbrook is in Timolin Kildare, there is nothing left at all of the buildings, but you can see the shadow of the of the foundations and lake in the field, on Google earth. I know my relative lived there as it states his residence on this marriage in 1841, I think he might have lived at Willowbrook whilst Ardmore was being built https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/11903505/ar…. I have added 2 files showing the location of Willowbrook, if the files don't come through again Willowbrook is located South South West of the town of Ballytore\Ballitore at the junction of the R747 and the L8040 roads. Regards Peter

  • Griffith's Valuation maps show the house and there's a reference to the land around Willowbrook as plot 15, abt 26 acres of land leased by a Rev. John Bonham from a Francis B. Carter, there's no residence associated with this plot. There is a residence listed for site 16, occupant is a Rev. Robert Moffat looks like a sublease from John Bonham. Plot 16 is probably close by but I can see not shown on any of the online Valuation maps. This section of the Valuation is dated July 1852. The townland is listed on the earlier (abt 1827 for this entry) Tithe Applotment records as 'Mullimask' - see : http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?… There's no mention of Willowbrook in Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837 - many of the large house do get a mention in these listings.

  • Shane Thank you for the information, I had been through Griffiths and the Tithe Books and was puzzled why my relative, James Butler, gave Willowbrook on his marriage record in 1841when he wasn't leasing the property or has any known relationship with the Rev John Bonham! James seems to have lived at Willowbrook for some time probably while Ardmore was being built, see the link at the bottom of this post. Perhaps the Rev John Bonham knew James's father John Butler, John had lands in Moone and was a Justice of the Peace and Sovereign of Athy. From the outline of the property in Griffiths Willowbrook appears to be a large property in substantial grounds I wondered why the property disappeared and is now farmland it's probably a question that only someone with local knowledge will be able to answer. James does not live at Ardmore for very long, his wife dies in 1858 and I find him and his children in Dublin in the 1870's. https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/11903505/ar…

  • Peter I inquired with the Archivist in Kildare County library in regard to Willowbrook house. He did not find anything on it, but sent a copy of a Notice of Sale of land in Willowbrook in 1902 and a report of the local hunt passing through Willowbrook to Ballitore in 1897. He has offered to contact the Ballitore Historical Group, should you wish. I am unable to send the documents on this site, but can do so if you forward an email address, privately. Regards,

  • McCoy Thank you for the time and trouble you have taken, the Willowbrook history isn't really important to tracing my Butlers but it is one of those interesting distractions that I often feel need to find out "what happened next". I would like to see the Notice of Sale of land in Willowbrook, how do I send you my email address? If it is no trouble, I would also like the Archivist to contact the Ballitore Historical Group to see if they have information on why Willowbrook is no longer standing. The Athy Butler line had a few interesting buildings https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/11505047/sa… Regards Peter

  • McCoy Thank you for your help I have sent an email to Kevin, I offered to share my research as it may be of interest to other people in Kildare. Not only was John Butler the Sovereign of Athy he had, among others, 3 daughters who went off to Tasmania, with their husbands, in the 1830s, please see the link, the site is not mine. https://www.cocker.id.au/maclaine/susan.php Regards Peter
