Hi,

I am trying to find records and townland locating my family.   William Nolan migrated to Australia in 1887, followed by the rest of his family in 1888.  His mother was Bridget (Carney) and Father was Michael Nolan.  On the records I have William's birth place was Achill Isle and Michael's birthplace was Carrowsalgahe.  He also has Islandeady down as his birthplace.  Was carrowsalgahe the townland? and Islandeady his Parish?  Can you help please?

  • Hi

Welcome to IrelandXO.  The address on Frank Nolan’s birth in 1866 / Margaret in 1873 was “Valley” Achill, located on northern corner of Island close to Dugort. The Townlands full name is “Tonatanvally”. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1866/03505/2288523.pdf      https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1866/03505/2288523.pdf

There was one Carney family residing there per 1901 Census   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Achill/Tonatanvally/

Birth of Honor Carney to John Carney & Bridget Fadian in 1884  (Fadden/McFadden). https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1884/02665/1982420.pdf

Carrowsallagh was located close to Newport on road to Achill Island in Newport Parish.  No Nolan or Carney families resided there in 1901   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Newport_West/Carrowsallagh/1606061/

Islandeddy is a Parish situated between Newport & Castlebar.

  • Thank you very much for this information.I don't think that Honor Carney is mine.  Honor McCann married Patrick Carney.  I have no information on when or where in Ireland.  Their daughter, Bridget Carney was born in Islandeady in 1839 or thereabouts .  Bridget Carney married Michael Nolan who was born in Carrowsalgahe who was born around 1834.  I have a feeling that William Nolan may not have been Michael's son but a son of Bridget to another man.  I think she may have had two children to someone else as on her death certificate, she lists one more child.   Francis, Mary and Margaret are listed as Michael and Bridget Nolan's children.  William seems to have been born before Michael and Bridget were married.

  • William left London on 5.4.1887 on the Waroonga and migrated to Australia.  He states his County as Clare.  Michael, Bridget, Francis, Mary & Margaret also London on the Waroonga on 12.1.1888. They stated their County as Mayo.  They all ended up in the same place in Australia and William went under the name of Nolan but I am wondering if he did have different father, whether he moved to Clare as an adult before he migrated to Australia.  Wouldn't I love to take a trip back in time and find out, although I don't think I would be strong enough to live in the conditions they lived.  Thank you so much for all your help.  Not knowing counties and parishes is all very confusing.

  • Hi William

I have just seen your message regarding the Nolan family Achill.  My great great grandmother,  was Bridget Nolan from Achill,  her father was Andrew Nolan from a village the Achill side of  Newport.

Could this be the family you are trying to find .

  • My Bridget Nolan was Bridget Carney, born at Islandeady and married to Michael Nolan.  They migrated to Australia in 1888.  You would think they must surely be related being so close together but obviously I have a lot to learn about Irish families.   We are going to be there in June so I might learn a bit about them all.

    Regards, Marie
