My grandfather Patrick Whitely was born in Paulstown in 1898 to Patrick Whitely (b. 1837) and Mary Flood (b. 1866). My great-grandfather Patrick was the son of William Whitely and Catherine Maher of Garriduff, likely married sometime around 1826. I am trying to find out more about the Whitely (Wheatly, Whately) family at the time of William Whitely and who his siblings and parents were. I have found :
Thomas Whitely married in 1837 in Paulstown to Anne Flood - likely brother of William
Mary Wheatly married in 1832in Garryduff to John Fitzpatrick - sister of William ???
Patrick Wheatly married in 1839 in Graignamanagh to Mary Ryan - brother of William ???
Patrick Whitely married in 1823 in Carlow to Julia (Mary) Byrne - brother of William ???
John Wheatly married in (1820)? to Judith Gorey - brother of William ?
Additonally - In 1999 (before I had started genealogy research), I did visit a graveyard in Paulstown. There was a gravestone there inscribed 'Erected by William Whitely in memory of his beloved father Patrick Whitely of Garryduff who died July 6, 1894 aged 84 years. Also his mother Mary Whitely who died Apr. 22, 1895 aged 84 years" . I have not been able to determine if this William Whitely was the son of Patrick Whitely and Mary Ryan or Patrick Whitely and Julia (Mary) Byrne or other ?
I am going to be in Paulstown in a few months (Oct 2018) and would certainly be interested in visiting any places that may help me further my research on the Whitely family.
Thank you in advance for your help and comments. Janet (from Canada)

Dear Janeteo:
I have heard back from one of our volunteers and here is the copied portion for you:
See if this helps
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kilkenny/Shankill/Jord…
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Paulstown/Dun…
On both census Patrick is 30 years older than his wife, he was with the Floods in 1911 at least on census night if not living there. It is unusual that they didn't lie about their ages.http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Shankill/Coor…; There is a William in this family. It is likely Michael is brother to Patrick senior and son of William. This is possibly the home place which Michael got and Patrick left to be a farm steward, likely in Shankill Castle for the Toler Aylwards.
The 1901 census for Mary Floods family
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Shankill/Jord…The above census appears a definite for Janet's grandfather.
The grave inscriptions for Patrick she read for Garryduff is likely a first cousin as her great grandfather Patrick, who was still alive in 1901.There are still some Whitely's in the area, a Thomas and Martin, I will try and contact them.
On the 1901 census In Carlow and Kilkenny there are no Wheatlys but there are Wheatleys in Carlow. So I don't think the names were mixed. One would need to speak to a Whitely to find out.
This volunteer will try to contact the above-mentioned family members and will also try to meet you if possible. You might let me know what your travel plans and dates are. You can email me directly at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com
All the best,
Jane.

Hello Janet,
A few years have passed but I have only recently seen your post & wondered if you had solved your brickwall about your Whitely.
I am a descendant of James Whitely who was born Aug 1822, son of Patrick Whitely and Julia Sarah Byrne from Paulstown or Jordanstown or Carlow. Patrick may have been born in Whiteley Bay, Northumberland, England.
James Whitely was in the military and shortly after his discharge he married Johanna Walsh 1850 & they immigrated to Western Australia.
We believe he was the only one of the family that came here but others seemed to have gone to the USA.
I have had my DNA done at Ancestry and have shared matches with people who have Flood in their trees but sometimes it is hard to make connections as they do not have trees.
I am not sure if I read somewhere that you havea photo of your relative with a Catholic Nun, and Johanna & James Whitely were very religious with many of their descendants in Western Australia becoming priests and nuns. It is believed that Johanna was the 1st teacher to start a Catholic School in York, Western Australia.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Vicki
