Hello everyone. My great uncle researched our family history when I was a teenager. He learned we came from a family named Orr who supposedly owned and entire mountain in Ireland and later they were basically run off their mountain.

I am not sure if the story is accurate and would like to find someone more knowledgeable who can confirm or discredit these claims. I don't know exact dates, have any first names  of the members of the family, nor do i have the name of the mountain that belonged to the Orr Family. Unsure if this information helps but my uncle's last name is Primmer and his mother was a White. Our family is located in Southeastern Ohio

  • I was not able to find where your Orr family came from in Ireland. Orrs came from Scotland to Ireland, primarily, settling in Northern Ireland. 'The earliest Orr found in Ireland is that of Richard Orr of Clontarf who died ca 1563. Whether he was of Scots origin or otherwise can only be conjecture, however there are no doubts about James Orr and Margaret McClement, from Ayrshire, who settled in Co Down in 1607 as part of the Montgomery settlement.' see link below.

Your family in America goes way back. On an Ancestry tree, I found Edward Kent Primmer (1924-2002) of Lancaster, Ohio. His parents were Edward Emmanuel Primmer and Mary Orr (1886-1961). I traced Mary to a Robert Orr born about 1814 in Virginia. His father was Nicholas Orr who died in 1842 in Harrison, Virginia and Ann. They were both born in Virginia. I could not find additional records. 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses were headcounts. The family were farmers.

On Roots Ireland there was a Nicholas Orr born in Down in 1859 and one born in Down in 1877. Perhaps distance relatives??

  • I apologize the two records I found on RootsIreland, mentioned above, were marriage records not birth.
