Hello,

I have a Thomas Wallace b.1823 (to John and Catherine), from Ballyadams who married Margaret Dempsey b.1820.

They had at least three children born in Ardenteagle, Killeshin, Co Carlow.

After they moved to Scotland, appearing in the 1851 census. Margaret Dempsey is not there; I can't see any death for her in Ireland or Scotland.

There is a possible listing for Thomas's father John in the Tithe Appointment Search.

Is there anywhere that would hold the Estate records that may give an insight into rents, evicions etc..?

I also wondered why they went to Scotland and not the easier route to England. As they were miners in Scotland would there have been a mine around Kileeshin?

Thanks,

John.

There are no death records from Carlow on roots; no luck with the Nat Library R C registers either.

Hopefully a Carlow expert will answer your questions about estate records.

  • May be of interest re your query on mining in the area - from the entry for Killeshin civil parish in Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of 1837 : "..Sandstone and limestone are found here, and extensive collieries are worked by H. Fitzmaurice, Esq. There were formerly smelting-furnaces, which were discontinued for want of fuel...".
