My ancestor was Mary Rodgers Wade.  She was born to a Catholic family in Derrynacross, Longford in about 1802.  I believe her parents' names were Owen rodgers and Catherine Gavan.  She married Michael Wade in 1828.  After he died in 1848, she emigrated to the United States with 4 children: Anna, Patrick, Owen, and John.  She settled in Rhode Island and died in 1886.   I have done a little research through the church and Griffith's Valuation but have had little success.  I appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction.

    Mary T.:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a marriage record but I did locate two baptismal records for Anne and Patrick in the Killoe RC parish records. The Killoe RC parish records start in 1826 so it is possible that the marriage occurred 1825 or earlier and maybe Owen and John were born 1825 or earlier? There are death records for Killoe from 1827-1853  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0172  They just show the name. No age or relations. There was a Michael MacQuade in 1828 but he would be too early for your ancestor.

  • Thank you so much.  Is this normal that the surname changes that much?   I know from my research that Michael is listed as Wade or McWade.  Thank you for your help.

  • Mary:

Exactness of spelling was not important in the 19th century same with dates of birth. Many were illiterate. So various spellings of surnames was typical.
