Hi, I'm trying to locate the birthplace of my great great great grandfather, and all I know is that it was Augherority, near Derry. His name was Andrew Hamilton, and was married to Rebecca Holmes. She was from Holmestown, Co. Donegal (Can't find that either). They were married in 1786.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)
thank you
Cheryl

Can't find either location in the standard townland sources for Ireland. Nothing like Augherority in Co Londonderry today or in the 1800s sources. There is a tonwland called Holmes in Donegal (parish of Killymard). Holmestown might be a local collection of houses within a townland, rather than a townland in it's own right. Or the name may just have fallen into disuse. Hopefully someon else will have better luck.

I located a probable match for 'Holmestown, Co. Donegal' - seems to be a village in Meenahoney townland (placename database - Logainm.ie), it's shown on the 1st edition OSI map as "Holmes's town" - see attached map extract. Meenahoney townland is in Donaghmore civil parish and Raphoe barony Co. Donegal, the townland is located about 7km south of the town of Raphoe.
Coordinates of "Holmes's Town' are approximately 54.820083 degrees north, 7.627344 degrees west. There's no sign of the village on the later c1890 OSI maps, or Google maps, but there is a "Holme's Town/Holmes's Town" shown very close to these coordinates on OpenStreetMaps.
