Hi! I wonder if you can help?
Cornelius Regan #1 is my 3rd GG
- born around 1795 in Cork
- married Honora Leary 02 Feb 1823 at a CC in Schull East
- he died a married man at the age of 79 in Corragateen, Skull, Cork, Ireland Julia Regan (iunknown) was there at his death
- his oldest son's name was Denis
- I can trace and confirm DNA matches with 5 of his 10 children. and many of the DNA matches are also in common with Cornelius #2 descendants.
Cornelius Regan #2
- born around 1796 in Cork
- married Catherine McCarthy 02 Mar 1824 • Drimoleague, Cork, Ireland
- he died 25 JUN 1864 • Aughaville, Cork, Ireland
- his oldest son's name is Jeremiah
- I can trace DNA matches from four of his children. And many of those matches are also in common with Cornelius #1
In conclusion, I believe they must be cousins.... but I can't be confident that any of the options I can locate through searching are really accurate. Can you please help me to see how these 2 connect? I will be happy to share more info if needed.
Thank you!

Hi Maureen
Thank you for all the information provided with your query. As you have stated you have DNA matches in common with both Denis #1 and Denis #2 which is possibly the best result you may get regarding the records that are available. Baptism and Marriage records only began for Catholics in Ireland in the early to mid nineteenth century. So you have been quite lucky to get the marriage records for both in 1824 and 1823 as some parishes only started recording in 1830s and 1840s. You won't therefore find their birth records which would give you their father's name. Tradition in Ireland at that time was to name the first born son after the father's father (which you appear to know) so one is Denis and the other is Jeremiah, which if tradition is followed rules out both Denis father's as being brothers. Possibly first cousins making their two Denis sons being second cousins.
I have found a gravestone record in the graveyard near Schull which was erected by Jeremiah O' Regan and Mary Daly of San Francisco in memory of their parents Jeremiah and Ellen Regan, Cappaglass with more O' Regan names inscribed thereon. It was common also at that time to have the "O" in front of surnames and dropped at various times. I am pointing out that record as you are messaging from the U.S.
Maybe a good idea to link your post to the Parishes both Denis were born in.
Kind regards
