I'm looking for any further information on my great great grandad Thomas Lewis and his wife Bridget Brown.

Both moved to Glasgow, had 2 sons. Thomas in 1873 and Peter 1878.

There is contridiction in the certificates i have about the date of their wedding.

One says 1857 August, Mullingar, Westmeath.

The other says June 1859, Westmeath.

Bridget Brown was born 1845 and died in Glasgow 15th March 1885.

Her Fathers name is Peter Brown.

Her mothers maiden name is Hart.

Its suggested Thomas Lewis was born 1840 and died in 1900. (I can find no details of his death in Scotland with that year.)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any Thomas Lewis/Bridget Brown marriage records, The June 1859 marriage you referenced was a Thomas Lewis/Bridget Roe marriage in Kinnegad RC parish in Co. Westmeath.

I also did not find a baptismal record for Bridget Brown with the parents names you provided.

  • In 1854 Griffith's Valuation of Westmeath listed two Peter Browns as heads of households. Perhaps one is your Bridget's father.

Source Surname First Name Townland Parish County
Griffith Brown Peter Rath Kilbixy Co. Westmeath
Griffith Brown Peter Multyfarnham Multyfarnham Co. Westmeath

  • It is doubtful Bridget was born in 1845 if she married in 1857-59. She would have been 12 or 14.  It is likely she was born earlier.

Do you know if the couple had children besides Thomas and Peter?  It would be really unusual for a couple to marry in the 1850s and not have children until the 70s.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I agree the suggested age at marriage are on the young side.

I have found out a daughter Ann Lewis was born in Ireland in 1863 before they moved to Scotland.

The 1881 census in Scotland has Bridget aged 38 so possibly born in 1843.

That condradicts the Death Certificate which has her aged 40 in 1885.

I now know Thomas was still living in 1903 and not deceased in 1900 as per first post.
