I have a lot of information about my ancestors from Ireland - I am blessed. I am currently looking for parents and possible siblings of Daniel Austin b 1792 or so in Balleymackey died in Kockanacree in 1869. I've seen Daniel's surname as Ashton/Aston and Austin. I have a possible parent of Thomas Austin and Ellen Guest but I have yet to prove this is true. I have seen Thomas Austin in 1820s in Ballinree as a farmer - and I Imagine this may be Daniel's father. I thought perhaps a burial record may give me more information but have looked in vain. I don't see him in Balleymackey - so was wondering if anyone knows of a burial ground in Ballinree?
Thanks for any help or advice you can give -

Thanks so much Christina - lovely to 'meet' you.
I did find that site with Tipperary Studies the day before yesterday! I'm looking through them all steadily but am finding nothing. Plenty of Kennedys, but no Austins. I did find some newspaper articles about Daniel's son Thomas, and Thomas' children and grandchildren today though. That is exciting! There were even a couple about Daniel - in 1843 someone stole his cow, and he searched 20 miles for her, and then 6 years later, a horse. Terrible! All of it though makes a name more human, and gives a rounder picture of who they were - their joys, and their struggles. All of the family so far have stayed in Modreeny - and one Thomas Austin just died in 2005 at the age of 95! I would be very curious to find out if there are any Austins still living in Knockanacree or Modreeny that I can connect with - so if you hear of any - please let me know. I've included a photograph of my Daniel Austin - just so you can put a face with a name. Can't you just picture Daniel out looking for that stolen cow - ready to bring the scoundrels to justice? I imagine the loss of that cow (article says it was worth 9 pounds) was felt by every member of the family. I'll keep searching the records for a Thomas Austin. I may have found a grandfather of Daniel in a John Austin who had a will that dated 1791 also lived in Balinree, but of course, no will exists anymore.....ugh. I spent my morning making conjectures of possible siblings for Daniel's wife Margaret Blackwell. I found a list of Killaloe marriages by license at the National Archives in Ireland website. If I'm right, she had three brothers: james, benjamin and john....but Benjamin and John fall off the face of the earth as soon as they are married - but James I found. I'm hoping his burial place leads me to the others on Margaret's side. Thanks again Christina for being on the other end of my questions. Have a wonderful day - I'm off to bed. - Valerie

Hi, you say Dainel died in 1869, I found a death in 1869 in Borrisokane.
If you use this link below, it's a free site.
https://irishgenealogy.ie
you will see the result. the original record is not listed BUT you can see the link to obtain it. not sure how much it would cost.
I know there are Austin people in Borrisokane, a townland called Bellgrove, they are neighbours to my Godmother (deseased now).
MargotJust a thought, were your Austin's related to the Mooney's?
One of the Mooney's went to the Falklands and married a lady with the surname Barnes.
They came back to Ireland had a family and then later they went to NewZealand.

Hi again Christine - and to you, Margot - lovely to hear from you as well. Ok - Christine - thank you so much - I'm pretty sure the family of Austin's in Nenagh are related to me in the Census - There was a son of my great x 3 grandfather who did not immigrate to Canada - his name was Thomas. Just last week I discovered him - then his wife, two children and their children - so I'm delighted about that - no contact with living relatives yet, but i did send out an email on ancestry - and hoping to hear back from the person who had them on her tree. I will check that link tomorrow morning first thing. The one in Lorra I'm pretty sure is the brother to the one in Nenagh. Both sons of Thomas mentioned above. Today I found a man who I am (in my gut) absolutetly sure belongs to my family who emigrated to Canada back in 1841. He is on the list of licensed marriages from Killaloe next to my great x 2 and 3 grandparents, but we did not have him on our tree. Benjamin Blackwell and his wife Ellen - sometimes Helen - Barry. I can't find him or his wife anywhere in Ireland after their marriage, but today I found him on a Canadian Census - his birth date fits into a gap in the known birthdates of his siblings - all of his childrens names are names of his brothers and sisters - and I followed his children's marriages and death records, and one had the name of his father and maiden name of his mother Benjamin Blackwell and Helen Carrie.......It's one letter off - I think it's them!!!! I'll look to see here in Canada if I can find an obituary for Benjamin and hopefully it will state his parents names or the county he is from. - I LOVE RESEARCH!!! To Margot - I ordered the death certificate for Daniel Ashton/Astin/Austin a few weeks ago, (it was 40 euros - a big chunk of change in Canadian money) and it has arrived - his daughter Ellen Astin/Austin was present at death, and I did find a newspaper article that sparked all of this busting through brick walls - it mentioned that a man named Daniel Ashton had broken his thigh bone, and ignored the advice of the doctors to rest for three months - he severely damaged his leg as a result and broke his arm as well! Four months after the article he died of dropsy - which is what you'd expect from someone who is older and breaks a hip. It helped me locate his property that he farmed in Knockanacree in Modreeny - and sparked all of my breakthroughs with his son Thomas who was the eldest boy and the only sibling to have remained in Ireland after he married Mary Coughlin - and they had two boys William and Richard - and as you inquired above - William married Isabella Mooney - so yes, I'm connected to the Mooney family by marriage. William and Isabella had seven children that I know about - two that died very early on - and it's his daughter Magaret Ellen (Nellie) who married a man with the last name Dennison - that's the family with the tree on ancestry I'm trying to connect to - without any luck so far. I have her picture though - she was born in 1908, so I'm sure she has died long ago, but I know she might have children that would be about 10 years older than my mom - and Nellie had a brother Thomas Austin who just died in 2005 at the age of 95- he and his wife Christina d.1978 have children, the youngest of whom is 10 years older than I am if they are still living. To say I am obsessed is a great understatement. I'm hoping to come to Ireland maybe next summer, and trace the steps of my ancestors, and meet some living relatives hopefully. I know of two already - one in Dublin and the other not far. We've connected years ago on ancestry, but all of this research is new to them as well, so I'm feeling wonderful that I can contribute to our tree and help in this way. There was a Thomas Austin I saw online in a Nenagh paper in 2015 or so, an older gentlemen with friends laughing with gusto - I know I'm related to him - I can feel it....so, ladies, mark my words - he's mine, that man - whoever he is. Ha ha. If you know of that family in Bellgrove - please do give them my contact information - If they are descended from Daniel Austin b.1792-3, to Thomas Austin b.1842 and Mary coughlin, to William b.1872 and his wife Isabella Mooney and their children; Albert, Elizabeth, Emily, Margaret, and Thomas OR Thomas' brother Richard b.1879 and susannah and their two children Mary and Richard (and there may be others, I just don't know who they are yet). Gosh, I hope someone recognizes those names. Night night for now, and thanks ladies for jumping on the bandwagon of my enthusiasm! Valerie Joy

Hi Valerie Joy,
I am in Wales, was born in Nenagh, lived in a cottage not far from the Mooney's at Congor House.
If you go to
https://www.eir.ie/search Austin Borrisokane you will see the Bellgrove address. Write to them and they may help.
Please use the https://irishgenealogy.ie site.
This is a record for Thomas Austin and Mary Coughlan as you see on this page it says Kings County, this is now County Offaly, Shinrone is not far from Roscrea and not far from Borrisokane, etc.
The Parishes/Counties/townlands overlap so you have to use the map, great fun isn't it!
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11394/8184029.pdfSearch by Surname only, then look for Borrisokane on the left, this was the registration district, also Roscrea.
Records are from the Registrars book so you would only need to pay for the records not listed.
I searched for the Blackwell family in the Tithe records 1823 to 1837 and there a few in the area.
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=blackwell&firstname=&county=Tipperary&parish=&townland=&search=Search
Next is Griffiths Valuaion 1837 to 1864
Sorry but you will need a paper map and plot all the townland/town names for your visit. This link has a list in the different townlands. This link is a map of Borrisokane........you get a better idea of the distance between the places.
https://www.bing.com/search?q=borrisokane&form=EDGTCT&qs=PF&cvid=981a357481554749b021a0d422c7670e&refig=4473498bcbcb4caea785b1cb70015219&cc=GB&setlang=en-USAs they were Church of Ireland, you may be looking in Modreeny as well, this is just before you get into Cloughjordan from Borrisokane. St Keiran's Church.
List of Graves.http://www.interment.net/data/ireland/tipperary/modrneey/index.htm
I will let you look at all these links, you may have some of them.Bye for now, Margot

Hi Margot - thank you so much - you live in Wales - The last time I was there, I stopped at Llangollen - not sure of the spelling, but it was spectacular. I loved it there. The first website listing you have there seems to be for a cellphone company and not a genealogy site - could this be a transciption error by chance? The marriage record is fabulous to have - I hadn't seen it or looked for it, in fact. I just went off of the index record at rootsireland. Thank you so much - I've emailed it to cousins of mine who live in Ireland. I'm sure they are very appreciative, as I am. ON the Tithe applotment books - the last one seems promising - even though the index does not list a first name, the actual record reads "Wid." for Widow - so Widow Blackwell....hm...If she is 'mine' there is only one person she can be, and that's my Margaret's grandmother! Interesting! I have copied it for later research. Is Balinree near to Roscrea? I'll look on the map. I have the Griffiths Valuations for my direct descendants, but now I'll look at the other relatives - thanks so much. Now, about the internment.net site - wow - I'd seen the Austins before, but hadn't looked further down at the Guests. There are a few names there I don't recognize - and so must be relatives of some sort. All of the Austin's I have on my tree except for...I think it was Robert. I don't know who that guy is. So cool! Thank you so much, Margot. I'm making progess on loose ends here in Canada. I have discovred a book in a local history centre about the Irish Blackwells and Hodgins and their emigration to Canada. I've contacted the local history centre (about 3 hours drive away) and asked how I can arrange to see the book. The description of it is "mostly family tree".....ha ha! Since a Blackwell did marry a Hodgins (you can see all the Hodgins in the Modreeny cemetery - I'm hoping this has some very valuable information in it. Plus, I have contacted a local library near where a Blackwell I'm searching lived. I'm hoping they might have an obituary for him which will help me be sure of his parents' names. Thanks for all your help, love.

Hi Valerie Joy,
Llangollen, we live a bout 12 miles from there.
Sorry I should have said........this is the telephone book, when you click on the link, drill down to the bottom to Directory Enquirires then put the name and borrisokane and choose residenutial, this will give the Austin's addresses.https://www.eir.ie/
Your Hodgins............was one of them born in Castle Otway?
When I saw the Hodgins name and Blackwell it rang a bell.
I have been helping people for well over 12 years and got information for this family. This won't help you as I delete any info I find as I do so many searches.
The family went to Canada. I wished now I kept the info.
I also obtained info for the Guests that went to Canada I think they were from Oxaprk or Newtown. Oh dear I should have kept the info.In the Tithe records, where there isn't a name, you will find that there isn't a year stated, this is because (as I have found) it's even earlier than 1823 and they only used the surname.
As I said it's great seraching! Yes, it would have said Wid for Widow and if the head of the family was the Mother then some records show the eldest son's name.Ballinree, Ballinree Church is nearer to Ballymackey.........Ballinree Graveyard is in Cloughjordan.
Hope this is a help for you.

Dear Margot, Valerie Joy & Christina:
I was glancing through this thread and I noted the query about the Hodgins family who left for Ontario. I have personally done some research for a descendant on this family, but I wanted to direct you to a thesis that was done by Bruce Elliott on the Talbot Emigrant Scheme which just celebrated its 200th anniversary this year and had a weekend at the Thomas MacDonagh Museum in Cloughjordan. There is an excellent book by Bruce Elliott about the scheme entitled "Irish Migrants to the Canadas" and it is well worth looking at.
All the best with your research, Valerie Joy. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Good morning Jane - It's so interesting that you mention that book - I'm half-way through it, as recommendation of a cousin from Ireland. It IS excellent. I got it as an ebook at my public library. There is also a record/book at a local history centre about 3 hours north of me here in Canada that is a family tree essentially of the Hodgins and Blackwell families. I've contacted the curator, and asked how I can get my hands on the record/book. I haven't heard back yet, but have my fingers crossed. I have made huge headway even in three weeks after 10 years of brick walls...but after reading half of the book mentioned above, and getting a month access to rootsireland and irish newspapers and some of the websites suggested from this site, I have now gotten much further back than I'd ever hoped. Could you tell me a little about Balinree and Garavalla in Ballymackey please? I noticed that my AUSTIN family tree is from there. I can see a John on the index of wills d.1770s, then another John 1791, and then a Thomas d. unknown on the Poor Law Rate books - and I'm assuming (I know that's not good) that my 3rd great grandfather Daniel Austin's father is Thomas (ancestry family tree) and his father is John, and his father is John. As Thomas is at Balinree at some point in Balleymackey, and then all but Thomas are at Garavalla in 1824, I'm wondering how close they are to each other. If I were to come to Ireland at some point, are the Poor Rate Law Books interesting to see? Do they give any more information than what is on the index? Thanks so much for replying, and for helping - I love this website - I wish there were something similar in Canada to help those looking for descendants - then I could return the favour. Blessings to you, and have a wonderful day. Valerie
