My Mother and I are on our way to Ireland in 3 weeks, to celebrate her 80th birthday. I just found this site now, we have been working on her Ancestry (hence our trip) for the past couple of years. Unfortunately we have been stuck. What we know:
Thomas McCarthy (born in Cork, 1835). Married to Catherine (maiden name unknown). Thomas has a sister named Mary McCarthy (born in Cork, 1840). Thomas and Catherine settled in New York, its possible they did go to England before NY.
They had 6 children: Thomas, Edward, Kate, Mary, James, Margaret.
We would love to be able to get any further information on this family connection, or visit any sites in Cork while there.

McCarthy is a very popular surname in Cork. RootsIreland (paid subscription) shows 3 Thomas(es) born Cork in 1835. None had a sister Mary identified. There is a free site you can check Irishgenealogy

Click on Church Records. It includes records from Cork City and west of there. I found six records you might want to check out. That said, unless you have a birth record, I wouldn't feel comfortable that 1835 is the exact year of Thomas' birth.
It would help if you could share more information.
When did Thomas come to America, were Catherine and him married at the time, where in New York did they live, any death records, and was Thomas a citizen?
Their children's date and place of birth, did they get married (to whom/ when/ where), death records?
Mary, did she come to America, when, where did she live, did she get married (to whom/ when/ where), and death records?

On Ancestry, I found the family on the 1880 US Census. Edward was 13 and born in New York. Thomas was not on the census.
