Any information would be appreciated.

I'm descended from William Crowley (1803-1868]  and Susan Arnold  married 1841 who lived in Stradbally.
William was the son of Charles who I believe was the son of Cornelius who lived at Curraghmore.

I have some information on the Crowleys but know nothing of Susan Arnold's family. Susan may have died in 1856.

My ancestor is George Crowley (B1852], son of William, and Susan Arnold  who came to Australia in 1871. His siblings John William, Eliza, Ellen and Charles all came to Australia as well.     Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and do not see the 1841 marriage record for Susan and William. Do you have a copy? I also do not see the baptismal record for Susan. I'm wondering if the Church of Ireland parish for her baptism and marriage does not have records available back in the mid-19th century.

  • Thanks Roger the only evidence I can find is a handwritten entry in the Public Record Office of Ireland Marriage Licence Bonds, Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Crowley   William and Susan Arnold 1841.  Names were as per information on Australian Certificates. On the Baptism Record fortheir children at Stradbally With Clonea and Ballylanheen, Waterford, Ireland her name is just given as Susan. I have not see original documents. Thanks again.

  • Hello Sallymarie,

    Thank you for your message.

I was unable to find the marriage in the Stradbally Church of Ireland marriage register so I wonder if Susan was from a different parish.

From memory, William and Susan lived in Knockrour, just outside the village. All that's left of the house is part of a gable wall.

I've done a good bit of research on the Church of Ireland parish of Stradbally and its families, and would be very interested to discuss this further. My email is cianflaherty96@gmail.com

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Sally and the Stradbally Waterford Community.

Sorry to jump in here, but My GG Grandfather is George Crowley's brother, John William (1841-1908). My G Grandfather is his son Frank (Francis Charles).

I am very excited as this is the first piece of info I have found about his family in Ireland, other than his birthplace and year of birth, from his obituary. It states :

    DEATH OF A' PIONEER.     Cairns Morning Post (Qld. : 1907 - 1909), Friday 17 January 1908, page 5

The "sad news of the death of Mr. J. W. Crowley was received during
the week from Perth, W,A. Most Northerners; especially old hands on
tho Hodgkinson will remember. the deceased gentleman, and learn of his,
death with regret. Born in the County Waterford, Ireland, in 1841,
the late Mr. Crowley, came to Australia at an early age, and for many,
years after coming to Queensland was largely interested in" 'mining
matters, principally on the Hodgkinson goldfield in its early days. He
acquired and owned Curraghmore Station, naming it after his birth place in Waterford, Ireland. It was
known that he was in failing health for some time past, and, as stated
above, he passed nway in Perth on the 13th inst. The sad intelligence
was wired on Monday last to the deceased gentleman's family by his
brother, Mr. Charles Crowley. The deceased, who was a colonist of the
good old style paid a visit to Ireland about two years ago, and had
been living privately in Perth for some years. He leaves a grown up
family, among whom are Messrs William, Frank and George Crowley, of
the Hodgkinson, and Mrs. E. Parsons, of tho same place. Mr. W. P.
Crowley, the deceased's eldest son, is at present absent from home, being
visiting Oakland Park Station," near Croydon, to take delivery of a mob
of Cattle which ho recently purchased and the sad news of ,
his father's death has not yet reached him.

I have been wondering for so long about he and his family, why he came out to Australia, under what circumstances and the date/ship.

I didn't know he had siblings. I wonder if they came together? JW had 5 children in Australia with Mary Keating d.1890, and at least 1 other to his 2nd wife, also Mary (Groves). His children carry his family's names - Charles, Francis, George, William and Arnold are all used in various configurations. So I'm sure I have the correct JW Crowley here.

I also have very little info about his wife Mary Keating, (parents Christian Keating and Margaret Fennill). They married in Australia, so Mary might be from another county and they may have met in Australia.

Anyway, any information would be appreciated.

I suppose you and I are very distant cousins Sally!

I hope this message finds someone

    Kind regards

    Ann Markwell.
