I believe I have traced my Smith ancestors who emigrated from Ireland to Providence, Rhode Island, then travelled by Waggon to California. The names of this family are father-Laurence, mother-Jane, Eliza (born in Ireland abt 1840) and Margaret (born in Ireland abt 1833). There may well have been others in this family. I have traced this family using my DNA matches and building trees. I would love to know where in Ireland they came from. I would like suggestions of where to search for emigration records (between 1850 and 1854). It seems more likely that it was about 1854. The daughter Margaret stayed in Rhode Island and married a Patrick Tracy in 1856. The other daughter married Captain Henry Jackson Spilman a mariner from the Isle of White. I found an obituary for Eliza Spilman (who died in 1930 in Berkeley, Alameda, Clifornia) which gave me part of this story.

Any guidance that you are able to give me would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Gwenda

  • Wow. Thank you Eileen. That area of Ireland was indicated by Ancestry as a part where my Uncle had ancestors so I was half expecting it to be somewhere between Belfast and Dublin. I have looked for emigration records but not had any luck yet.

I have ancestors in various places in Ireland, Tipperary, Sligo, Cavan, Derry and Antrim and I visited all these places last Summer but had no idea where my Smiths came from. At present my Ancestry subs only covers the UK. I really do appreciated your findings.

    Thank you so much.

  • Gwenda,

My computer is acting up and I have not found records of when the Smith family came to America. I hope I found the right family. Was Eliza in in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake before going to Berkeley?

  • Thank you for your searches. The names in your Louth family are reflected in Eliza Spilman's children. Of course we don't know how many of the children survived. If Eliza was born in 1839 (and emigrated at the age of 13) and a brother was born in Ireland in 1852 this narrows down the emigration year to 1852-1853, possibly 1854.As Mary was born in 1837 it probably means that Mary Ann (1835) did not survive.
