My grandfather, Patrick Whitely, was born in Paulstown on Feb. 19, 1898.  His parents were Patrick Whitely (born 1837 Paulstown) and Mary Flood (born 1867 Shankill).  I have photos of my grandfather with a relative of his who was a nun.  I am trying to find out what his relation was to her.   I have a few photos of her and I have a memorial card.  The information on the memorial card says ' Sister Mary of St. Margaret, Mary Flood, Died October 16, 1957, Age 88th year, in religion 62 years. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery'.    This would mean that she was born around 1869 so she would be roughly the same age as my great-grandmother. Both my great-grandmother and the nun were named Mary Flood.    Is there a place where I can find records on sisters of religious orders ?   Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Jane

I had a look at the Paulstown baptisms for Mary Flood on ww.rootsireland.ie/ and found this one:

    Name:Mary FloodDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:25-Nov-1866Address:JordanstownParish/District:PAULSTOWNGender:FemaleCountyCo. Kilkenny
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:William FloodMother:Mary KellyOccupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1:Patt Flood Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2:Alicia Wheatley

It's the only Paulstown one that's close to 1869 - next is 1858

You'll notice that the 2nd Informant is Wheatley - could this be Whitely or a coincidence?

Unfortunately the site only has C of I records for Shankill! There are none in the Nat Librar's RC registers either.

Here are the other children of this Mary's parents:

Given the info you gave, would the Marys have been cousins?

This however is the only marriage record for Whitely and Flood in Kilkenny:

    Date of Marriage:20-Oct-1892
    Parish / District:GOWRAN
    County:Co. Kilkenny
    Husband:PatrickWhitely Address:Viewmount Denomination:Civil Parish Occupation:STEWARD Age 27 WIDOWER
Wife: MaryFlood Jordanstown  / District Civil Parish / Spinster (Previously unmarried)
    Husband's Father William Whitely Occupation:FARMER

    Husband's Mother

    Witness 2Name:BridgetFlood
    Notes:

I wonder whether the fact that he was a widower has any bearing? Could Mary 1 have been from his first marriage?

Records relating to the lives of priests and/or nuns in the Catholic church are to be found primarily in two sources. The Irish Catholic Directory (published annually since 1836) and the published list Maynooth Students & Ordinations Index 1795-1982 by Patrick J. Hamell (Maynooth: no date) covering the first 100 years of those who entered the seminary at Maynooth.

    Locating Catholic Records

Original parish registers are in local custody. Sometimes a priest will search parish records for you. Names, addresses, and parishes of priests are listed in the Irish Catholic Directory and Diary.

The National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin holds filmed copies of almost all pre-1880 parish records--the largest collection of Roman catholic parish registers (with about 98% parish coverage for the whole country). In 2015 these microfilms were digitalized and put online at their website, and later on Ancestry and FindMyPast.

Filmed copies of pre-1880 parish registers for Northern Ireland are also kept by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.

I'm no expert in R C records but found the above which might be a start
