A brick wall for years, am now trying to track down John Joseph Sheridan who was born around 1847 Ireland (per NJ death certificate in 1894).  Death certificate states his parents were John and Mary.......maybe Marie?

He married Anna/Ann Gorry/Gorrey from Drumbaraugh, Carnaross, Meath. Not sure where they married- no records yet found.

They lived near Newark, New Jersey.

Their children:  Mary 1888 - 1969

                         John  1890- 1891

                         Anne  1892-1893

                         Joseph J  1893- 1926

The reason I am trying Kells area is because his wife, Anna Gorrey, returned to Ireland in 1926 and married Peter Hynes in St. Columbas Church in Kells..........they lived in Kilskyre.

Any ideas for where I should look?  Would love to nail this down before an August trip to the area!

Thanks from South of the Equator!

  • The parish register records for the Catholic parish of Kells are available online, going back to 1791, so you could try looking for John and Anna there in the 1840's (in case they were from the same parish).  The records for that parish can be accessed at this link:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0940

The record you have mentions both Drumbaragh and Carnaross.  Those are two different townlands located close to one another, west of the town of Kells.  Carnaross may be in the next Catholic parish to the north, which is also called Carnaross, which has records back to 1805.  You can use the interactive map at the above link to move to the records for that parish.

Carnaross is in the civil (administrative) parish of Castlekeeran (which also goes by other names), which straddles the Meath/Cavan border.  Drumbaragh is in the civil parish of Kells.  Catholic parishes and civil parishes do not always have the same boundaries (or even the same names at times).  To complicate things, the boundaries of both townlands and civil parishes have been adjusted over the years, and were not standardized until the late 19th century (with some additional changes after that), so you may have to check both parishes.  Baptismal records usually name the townland where the family lived, and if you locate that in the parish register, you can find more info about the townland itself by choosing it from the list at this link:

    For Kells:  https://www.townlands.ie/meath/kells/

    For Castlekeeran:  https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/loughan-or-castlekeeran/

The pages for each townland also show links to other info, such as census records.

For the townland of Drumbaragh, you can find more info at this link:

    https://www.townlands.ie/meath/upper-kells/kells/boherboy/drumbaragh/

The town (and townland) of Kilskyre/Kilskeer is just a bit to the south of Drumbaragh, so all three of these townlands are fairly near one another, even though they may be in separate parishes.  You can see more info about Kilskyre/Kilskeer at this link:

    https://www.townlands.ie/meath/upper-kells/kilskeer/kilskeer/kilskeer/

Although Kilskyre/Kilskeer is near the other townlands, it appears to be across the parish border in the Catholic parish of Kilskyre, and you can access the Kilskyre parish records (going back to 1784) by using the interactive map mentioned above once again.

  • WOW!    Thank you, Kevin45sfl!!  A wonderful amount of information to lead me in the Sheridan search!

If I have a baptismal date with only "Ireland" as the event place, what suggestions could you make for my search?

Again, it is for that John Joseph Sheridan, and it is from the Family Search INDEX.  Date:  4 Sept 1845.  Parents John and Marie

    Does not give a county.

Will try to go to a Family History Library to see the original register document in the next month......just wondered if my fingers could do that work online.

    THANK YOU!

Best wishes for a good new year!
