Hello and thanks in advance for any help with this. I am trying to find information on my multi great grandfather Peter Kane. I have a few scraps of information but not sure where to turn next. Peter was born in the Connaght region in 1780 and we have references to him as having lived in both County Mayo and County Leitrim. His son John was born in 1818 here in the States so he must have immigrated between 1800 and 1817. Immigration records over here do not list him though.
His son lived in the US states of New York, Minnisota and South Dakota. Peter Kane died in South Dakota in 1880.
With so little information I am not sure where to start but any answers are probably in Ireland. Where would be a logical place to begin the search?

Unfortunately, finding church records back to the 1700s in the West of Ireland is basically impossible. None of the RC parishes in Leitrim or Mayo have records back to the 1700s. Civil registration did not start until 1864.
There are also no records of ships leaving Ireland back in the early 1800s.
You may want to consider a DNA test. I would suggest an autosomal test (which tracks all ancestrsal lines) rather than the Y-DNA test which goes back on your pure paternal line. You can take the Y test but in my experience it goes back 200+ years.
Let me know if you have any questions.
