Hi all,

My husband’s family immigrated from Ireland two generations ago and I am trying to help him uncover some of his family history. Unfortunately his grandfather has long passed and never spoke much about it.

We have information dating back to his great-great grandfather, but hardly any information prior to that. His name was Peter Michael Molony, married to Margaret Mary Yourell, and was a shopkeeper who lived above his shop on 59 Grafton Street, Dublin. He opened the shop in 1892 and prior to this, worked as a buyer for Brown, Thomas & Co. He passed on 4 March 1901. They had three children together - one being my husband’s great grandfather, Thomas Earnest Molony, who was born in Dublin on 7 Oct 1896. After his death, the shop was sold and became “The Cairo Cafe” which was later known as being a meeting place for English spies and British informers. Several years down, it served as a tea hall and dance room during the War of Independence. 

We are trying to find any information on the family prior to this timeframe. It’s unclear if Peter and Margaret lived in Ireland their entire lives or if they moved from a different part of the country.

    Attached is their civil marriage record that shows their father's names....additionally one of the witnesses was Emily Yourell...perhaps Margaret's sister. In looking for their birth records, the only one that I found was for a Margaret in Tipperary with a surname variation or Yourell...Uriel, but the father is the same name, Thomas. I'm not 100% certain this is her record though.

  • Thank you Carolyn! Unfortunately I think you are right and this is not our Margaret. It’s hard to say because there are many similarities, but also some differences. We know she was around 19 at the time of her marriage in 1891…by the birth date on these records, she would have been 23. Perhaps that’s not too much of a difference though

  • Hi,

    due to the comment by Carolyn re Emily I found a birth record in 1868 in Piercetown, Dunshaughlin. 

    I looked at the 1901 census and found this - http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Meath/Dunboyne/Piercetown/…

    I found this birth cert for Mary Margaret Yourell  - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…;

    I didn't look for the death of Thomas Yourell or any other linkages so this "lead" needs to be treated with caution.

    That birth record for Mary Margaret found by Jim is probably correct. I couldn't open the above link, but the date is 28 Feb 1867; and her parents are the same as those in Emily's birth record of 1868...Thomas and Mary Matthews. She was probably older than 19 at marriage. "Of full age" in the Irish records mean the person is over 21 years old.

  • My apologies for the delayed response! For some reason I was not receiving notifications and just happened to read all of these messages. My husband is in Munich right now for work so I havent yet had a chance to share with him but I’ve spoken to my father in law and do believe the Yourells you found are the correct ones🙂
